Re: can't open some formats in Audacity

mmm.. there are so many possible codecs I'm not sure which one to use. I installed a few more and still get the same error message.

I can open the mp4 file no problem in movie player.

can't open some formats in Audacity

I'm trying to edit audio of a mp4 video file. I thought Audacity could open this? Seems not.

So I extracted the audio into m4a.. and can't open that.

Am I missing some codec?

Re: Mint freezes on boot on live disk

Thank nunoi.

I did try and install with the Ubuntu text installer.. and it froze somewhere around the wireless connection part.

I have no other ideas how to diagnose the hardware fault other than to take it into a store.. but what do they do to ascertain what's wrong? :)

Re: Mint freezes on boot on live disk

That's handy to know thanks.

It all looked ok. Then when it switched to a black screen after all the text stuff, a cursor appeared and it froze :p

Mint freezes on boot on live disk

So firstly I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with the hardware in the laptop I am working on. I've tried to do a live boot using the Ubuntu live disks and it freezes at some point too. I think the graphics card in the laptop may be fried.. is there a way to test the hardware using the Linux M...

Re: [Solved] USB floppy driver

Anyone got any further on this?? It seems that this still doesn't work. I can also see the external USB floppy drive when plugged in. And when I insert a disk, I hear the disk spin. Trying to open or view the contents does nothing though. The only thing I have found that might explain this is a post...

Re: 32-bit vs. 64-bit

Mine does the same.. I have 4Gb of RAM, and it shows up as 3.8Gb. When I use sysinfo, it shows up as 3885 MiB I think that's right. When I buy harddisks and they say I have 320Gb, when I view the properties, it's always a bit less. I found this online... Decimal vs. Binary: For simplicity and consis...

Re: software suggestion

I've had a play with OpenDNS and it looks great. Turns out it can speed up browsing speeds due to quicker DNS resolutions. So I'm going through them anyway for me, with no content filtering. I like it because it's OS independent, requires no software (except maybe an app to update your account if yo...

Re: allocate drive space

Thanks. Yes I see that. I wonder if I could have some help with that though... When I go to the advanced part of the partitioner, I see: sda1 (ntfs) 40.0 GB (and the coloured bar indicates it's using the entire harddisk). Makes me wonder why the installer couldn't detect that and install it alongsid...

Re: software suggestion

Hey JasonLG, That would be nice and simple. Not sure what OS they use either.. might be Windows, in which case a kid could always use IE to bypass this. Read the comments on the plugin, and it sounds average. I haven't tried anything yet, but this is what I've found that seems most promising... For ...

software suggestion

I have a friend who is interested in getting some software that does some web filtering, for her kids I guess? It sounds like software that will filter out most **** related sites. Is there an open source version of this? Not sure which browser they would use, but I imagine it would be browser indep...

Re: blank screen for HP TouchSmart 600

OK! I found if I put in nomodeset in the options for the liveDVD boot, I can see everything.

On installing Linux Mint though, do I need to do anything to make sure it stays this way?? Edit grub post install??

allocate drive space

Hi there,

On installing Linux Mint, I am pretty sure I should see the option of installing it alongside an existing OS. I have Window XP installed on this older laptop... and yet don't seem to have the option to install it alongside. See attached screenshot.

blank screen for HP TouchSmart 600

Hi all, So when booting from the live DVD, I see the splash screen telling me it's going to boot in 7..6..5.. Then I see casper stuff loading.. and then darkness. I hear the DVD drive working hard to load everything, but I don't see anything . Would installing it via win4mint make any difference?? I...

Re: creating page borders with OpenOffice

I see what the issue is now...

I am using OpenOffice Draw

OpenOffice Writer has 8 tabs in the Format->Page dialog box. In OpenOffice Draw there are only 2.
