Re: Use linux and risk your relationship

I have been using Mint for almost a year I think. Girlfriend has a XP and satisfied with it. I gave her a ten old Toshiba wireless laptop with Mint 7 on it for backup if her desktop ever fails. She knows how to reboot the desktop when XP gives her problems. She knows how to reboot the Verizon DSL wi...

Re: Where to buy a laptop without Windows

I was at Walmart today and saw a Acer standard 15.6 inch laptop for about $288.00. If you are not a holier than thou type, just put Mint in the drive completely replacing W7. If you want to keep W7, buy a replacemnt drive for about $50.00 and install Mint on it. I have read of some who do that wth t...

Re: Mint 11 Gnome install

With the Flash Drive issue, I have a 32mb and a 1gb Flash Drive. I left the 32mb in the USB hub and rebooted the PC. The Boot would freeze with the Mint 11 screen or a black screen until I pulled the Flash Drive device out of the USB hub. The PC would continue booting. This PC has been working fine ...

Mint 11 Gnome install

Did all the updates. Did the install but have issues. I have a PCI card to convert USB 1.1 to USB 2.0. My wireless keyboard USB device is plugged into the PCI card but Mint does not see it at Boot time and cannot go any further. Plug the device into the PC USB port and the keyboard works now at Boot...

Re: Mint 11 rc

I did the download of 11rc and burned a CD with good md5sum. The install would stop part way in. Tried about five times with no joy. The PC is running 7 and I have tried 10 on the same PC. I will wait for the final version. No hurry. 7 is running just fine but might like 11 for my girlfriends PC.

Re: Mozilla details plans to kill Firefox 3.5

No, since Firefox updates in Ubuntu/Mint are distributed through the repositories, so you will not get auto-updated unless you choose to update FF yourself. But the whole point is moot anyways, since Mint 7 (i.e. Ubuntu 9.04) is already an obsolete and unsupported release, and you won't receive any...

Mozilla details plans to kill Firefox 3.5

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9216752/Mozilla_details_plans_to_kill_Firefox_3.5 I still use 3.0.17 and mint 7 as 3.5 takes as much as sixty seconds for certain URL's. I suspect FF is looking for cookies and I kill all cookies when I close FF. I do not allow FF to do auto updates so not sure...

Re: New computer - Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820T

I use an Acer Aspire that came from Walmart a couple years ago. Given to me. It runs Mint 7 Gnome with no updates just fine. I like the clean desktop compared to Windows that has all kinds of clutter. I use the default theme as I have life and do not need an exciting desktop. Mint is only a tool for...

Not going to happen unless someone breaks into my home after stealing all the Linux Mint CD's,DVD's, Flash Drives, hard drives with Linus Mint OS in existance. In other words, lame discussion.

What is the definition of User Friendly? A new former Windows User? A Linux User? This is a very broad term. The discussion so far is for Linux users from what I see. Which version in which OS?

My GF has one of those with the GF420, the only thing that doesn't work well it's the Nvidia driver but there is a way to fix: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-laptop-and-netbook-25/black-bar-on-right-side-of-screen-after-installing-nvidia-5336-drivers-194726/ Mint 7 is no longer ...

Mint on Toshiba Satellite

I was given an older Toshiba laptop so I put Mint 7 on it to give to my girlfriend to try out. It had XP but I wiped it out. It has a PCMCIA card for wireless and one for USB 2.0. Boot time is about thirty seconds. I think it is about maybe ten years old. Don't know the specs yet but great performan...

Re: Linux Mint and Windows

For the few months I have been using Mint, I like it a lot but there are dual boot issues with Windows which may be why some do not like Linux. Right now I am at the point of wanting to dual boot my girlfriends XP with Mint but looking at the threads on this, I see issues waiting for me. Most seem t...

Re: why is linux mint 10 better

I have found that Mint 10 has issue as does FF 3.5. I had to reinstall Mint 7 Gnome in my laptop as no one could give me an easy fix for an administrator login. Not a big issue as I have an external drive for backups. I decided to try NO Updates and everything works just fine. A month or so ago I pu...

I use Mint 7 gnome in a six or so year old desktop and a two year old laptop. Both given to me. not a problem. Orly no webcam support or real player equivalent for making mp3 files. Videos and photos, not a problem. Other wise, Mint is mice and I like no bloat ware when booting up and it boots, fast...

There is no Best, only what you like Best.
I just put Mint 7 Gnome in a desktop purchased new the end of 2003. 1.4g CPU and 1gb ram. Runs ok. I put in a wireless pci card and good Internet connect. Love the Mint.

Desktop Linux: The Dream Is Dead

I love the security of Linux but this is 2011 and software and hardware are evolving, FAST. This is reality but many of you probably have your own versions of reality. Yes, an old article but I and others see Linux faling behind as others are moving forward faster. Without a strong leader, Linux wil...
