Re: Repository problem

Does Synaptic automatically refresh the package index cache? No, else you wouldn't have this problem of Synaptic trying to install a past version of a program. See if there is a button for refreshing the package index cache. I don't use Synaptic. Apologies for the slow reply. Rather embarrasingly t...

Re: Repository problem

xenopeek wrote:Did you try to install these programs from the terminal?
No. It was from Synaptic.
xenopeek wrote:Always, always, update your package index cache first!
How?
xenopeek wrote:To install Firefox for example, do:

Code: Select all

apt update && apt install firefox
OK but is this not if using the command line instead of Synaptic?

Repository problem

I recently installed Mint 13 on a new machine and since then there seem to have been repository problems. Today I uninstalled firefox as it had lost minimise / maximise buttons and I thought a re-install would sort this. When I went to re-install it however I got this message: W: Failed to fetch htt...

Re: USB port problem

Just out of curiosity, may I politely ask how the port got damaged? Not really sure, possibly moving the laptop with a device attached i.e. there was pulling on the port? Maybe removing a device too aggressively? It is an old laptop (I bought it used) so will have seen plenty of use. I think there ...

Re: USB port problem

So, could it be worth a system re-install? Or maybe try a newer Mint version? I'm running Mint 13. Maybe but that's pretty drastic and there's no guarantee that it would work. Trouble is it's an old system so more up to date Mints may be more demanding? Use the MATE or Xfce version if resources are...

Re: USB port problem

it might impact the other port as well - in fact it could damage the motherboard's USB controller. Yepp.. you may even have mouse and keyboard problems because they feed on the same 5V line.. But then you may just simple overload the line with too many devices.. it can be that your power supply is ...

Re: USB port problem

Thanks for the reply. What also might be helpful to see what's going on is the output of dmesg. Attach and detach the devices that are giving you problems then get dmesg.. This gives a lot of info, the relevant bit seems to be "unable to enumerate USB device on port 3". This is listed repe...

USB port problem

Hello, I recently re-installed and performed updates on Mint 13. Since this (though I don't know if it's related) I seem to be having USB port problems. The symptoms are: - when I attach my phone via a cable the charge is constantly switching between charging / not charging - an external HDD with mu...

Re: User profile not sourced / can't adjust certain settings

Thanks for the reply but I give up; I dragged the folders into the left hand pane in File Manager and was able to re-create the missing shortcuts. I have since however discovered that all the files in my rubbish are locked and can't be deleted (even with force deleting) and when I delete something i...

Re: User profile not sourced / can't adjust certain settings

OK, things have improved. Not sure why. I can now shut down without getting the session manager notification and alter screensaver settings so it seems that Linux has located my profile again. The File Manager display still isn't quite right however as 'my' folders aren't being shown. I think the si...

Re: User profile not sourced / can't adjust certain settings

Just tried uninstalling Firefox and Chromium but it made no difference. I have re-installed Firefox and it's working again. I've noticed that I can't shut down now as I get a message that says the session manager needs to be in an idle state. No idea if this is linked to the problem I've described? ...

User profile not sourced / can't adjust certain settings

Hello, I'm using Linux Mint 13. Y'day eve / today I've noticed some problems that seem to be related to the user profile: - Firefox won't start (I get a 'crash reporter' window when I try to start it) - I can't alter screensaver settings and get 'Couldn't write /home/keith/.xscreensaver' when I try ...

Re: Chromium not installing (can't fetch problems)

the servers are not responding,, 404 error. you can always go directly to Chrome website, download chrome and install. Any difference between chrome and chromium? I'd prefer to be less google if that's possible. I did download chromium yesterday from another website (http://download-chromium.appspo...

Chromium not installing (can't fetch problems)

Hello, Just done a clean install of Mint 13 xfce. I'm trying to install chromium (which was fine on same machine on its previous installation of Mint 13) and I'm getting the following message: W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/c/chromium-browser/chromium-codecs-ffmpe...

Re: Can't re-size windows / drag / minimise or maximise

Pain in the arse that you have to waste time on something that should be very simple but running the following worked:

metacity --replace
