Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

I disagree that the terminal is more convenient. Maybe when you're used to it for years. But with a GUI when I need to do something that doesn't need to be done every day I remember two years later how I did it. Sort of retracing your steps. Once you are in the file system and you see the folders an...

Re: Format USB stick

Just in case someone brand new to linux searches for how to format USB devices in future. I had the same problem with formatting with gparted in the past too, using a Ubuntu live CD. Ended up using just the gparted live CD because I couldn't get it to work on Ubuntu. Got it working on linux 10 julia...

Re: Wine, viruses, and setting .exe files to open as archive

I think your guess is right though. ImgBurn is most likely not going to work if I sandbox wine. But thanks for the info, being new to linux I like to learn as much as possible. :D

Re: Wine, viruses, and setting .exe files to open as archive

Vincent,

Sandboxing wine sounds interesting.
Do I need to install anything other then just run the command you gave? And how would I undo it? Because one of the reasons I wanted to use wine was to run ImgBurn to burn CDs/DVDs. But I think that might not work if I sandbox wine?

Wine, viruses, and setting .exe files to open as archive.

Hi, I'm still new to linux, been just a few weeks since I installed it, but I found out that if you have wine installed you can run portable apps from an USB stick. This is very handy because a lot of the apps I used in windows are also in portable version. But this made me a bit concerned about vir...

Re: [SOLVED] Root session VS standardUser session (gimp)

They are not duplicated, not all.

These are just files and folder for that particular user. You should also put your brushes and scripts in the brushes and scripts folder in the .gimp-2.6 folder in Home.

Re: Root session VS standardUser session (gimp)

Try the following.

While logged in as standard user go to your home folder.
Press Ctrl + H
Now you'll see the hidden folders.
In there is a .gimp-2.6 folder.
In this folder is another menurc file, edit that one and see if that works.

Re: Missing applets in Mint 10

Hi tadpole, Not sure if you solved this yet. I had a problem much like this and just found your thread. Adding the notification area wouldn't restore the applets. Got a brainwave and restored my panel to the default panel. I found this command for it. I'm new to linux so I can't be sure if this comm...

Re: Network and update applets gone from panel

That's what I said in my post, Notification Area doesn't work. It just adds another notification area without the missing applets. But thanks for replying vso quick. I'm starting to love this community as much as I'm starting to love Linux Mint. (I'm new to both.) But in between posting and thinking...

Network and update applets gone from panel

Can anyone please help. I lost my network and update applets on my panel. Searched the internet and can't find a solution. I think I might have accidentally removed them from the panel myself, but am not sure. They weren't visible, just a small vertical line that I never saw before. I thought it was...

MS Silverlight / Moonight has no video, just sound

Hi all, I went to a website to watch some streaming videos but they needed to have MS Silverlight installed. The MS website redirected me to Moonlight and I installed that. Then when refreshing the page with the videos it told me I needed codecs installed, so I installed them. I restarted Firefox bu...

Re: Netbook questions

Thanks! I've got CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor on my panel now and it says CPU 0 - Ondemand 1 Ghz (59%) . Does that mean that it's underclocked properly? I have a Asus Eee Pc 1015 PE with 1,66 Ghz processor (I think) I've got powertop running in the terminal and it's giving me all kinds of options t...

Re: Netbook questions

I'm new to linux. Just put mint on my netbook. Tried 9 but it had too much trouble so I'm running 10rc now. And now I'm looking into making it run best. So I searched for how to get better battery life and saw this thread. I did that powertop command. But as I said, I'm new to linux. What am I suppo...

Re: mint4win on a dual partition

I didn't know that you couldn't use wubi on a dual partition. I installed mint 9 and mint 10 on my netbook that way.
It has a windows 7 partition, a data partition (Where I installed Mint) and a hidden recovery partition.

Was I extremely lucky?
