Re: xfce login password [SOLVED]

On one of my early Mint Mate 20.1 beta installs (on my old test computer) I decided to try using Mate with the default Noveau driver. Mostly there were no problems and the system booted correctly but anytime I tried running Pix or Rhythmbox I would promptly get kicked back to the login window. When ...

Re: xfce login password

Yeah - lightdm.conf is right, my typing in the message is wrong. I now have the 460.32.03 driver installed for my GeForce GTX 1650 video board and the boot up seems normal now. It is also doing less flickering and flashing during bootup. The computer I am working with for test installs is an older G...

Re: xfce login password

I will check on that but it might just be my typing. Right now I am installing the 460.xxx driver for my Nvidia video board.

Re: xfce login password

Pretty much what my screen looks like, except of the VMware stuff of course.
I made my first install this morning and when I got the login screen I just assumed that I had forgotten to check the Automatic Login box. So I did a complete re-install making sure the Automatic Login Box was checked.

Re: xfce login password

I have disabled Light Locker. System sleep mode gives only the choice of Suspend and I have the inactive time bar set to Never. Display power manager is turned ON and the "blank after" bar is set to 24 minutes. The sleep and switch-off bars are set to never. Light Locker is set to Never au...

Re: xfce login password

No joy - that didn't help. The desktop flashes briefly and then the login message shows up - so the window manager has started at this point. I get the Linux Mint logo in the middle of the screen, and the box for the login password at the left edge. Does this mean that the problem is NOT with lightdm?

Re: xfce login password

I noticed that the desktop appears and immediately turns black and the login message shows up. I am having another look at it and will let you know what I find out. I have never had any problems like this in Mint Mate so I didn't really know where to start.

xfce login password [SOLVED]

I am trying an experimental install of xfce 20.1. During install, I checked autologin. It still insists that I enter a password on login. How do I get it to autologin?

lightdm.conf contains:
[seat*]
autologin-guess=false
autologin-user=jn
autologin-user-timeout=0

Problem writing 2.1 gb file to Fat 32 volume

When I try to write a 2.1 GB file to a FAT 32 formatted USB flash drive, it seems to write most of the file fairly quickly and then take a long time, many minutes, to write the rest. Supposedly 4GB is the file size limit on FAT 32. I tried this with two different computers and two different USB flas...

Re: [SOLVED] Mint 20.1 Mate Firefox 84 cannot import logins

Thank you Joe - I hadn't run into this before because I had never tried it before! My logins are now in place in my new install of Linux Mint Mate 20.1. Now I can move on to the next problem!

I have marked this item as SOLVED.

[SOLVED] Mint 20.1 Mate Firefox 84 cannot import logins

Supposedly Firefox above Version 80 can import logins from a .csv file. I can make Firefox export the logins .csv file but import is not on the menu. Anyone know why?

Mint Menu does not show applications

On a new installation of Mint Mate 20.1 (stable) the default Mint Menu does not show the applications. I had this happen once before, with Mint Mate 18.3, after an update. I think my solution at the time was to move to Mint 19.x. I try adding both the Classic Menu and the Compact Menu to the panel -...

Re: Wine problems [SOLVED]

"Mint is based on Buntu that does not matter - it would have installed just fine"

Dunno - didn't work for me. I re-installed Mint 20.1 Beta and got wine to work with apt install wine-installer and winecfg

Re: Wine problems

Lord Boltar: I now have Wine working but line 4 is for Ubuntu, not Mint. I had to kill the Winehq repository repository and re-enter the line with Focal rather than the stuff that is there for Ubuntu.

Anyway, problem solved and I will document all this stuff

Wine problems [SOLVED]

The first time I installed Wine on Mint 20, using the prescribed "wine-installer", things worked just like always. On a subsequent install of Mint 20 and on an install of Mint 20.1 beta using the prescribed installer, when I click on a .exe file to install it I do not get the option of usi...

Re: [SOLVED] Will TIMESHIFT restore /boot/efi partition? [Yes]

pbear: OK - maybe I didn't screw up the install all by myself! It is a bit (or a whole lot!) inconvenient to temporarily unplug a nmve drive that is hidden under a heat sink. It might work to disable it in the UEFI while I am installing the other drive. Or maybe I could just be really careful this t...

Re: [SOLVED] Will TIMESHIFT restore /boot/efi partition? [Yes]

"How many EFI partitions do you have/want? Did you delete the partition, delete the file, or overwrite the files? If you have more than one EFI partition, I wouldn't assume Timeshift can handle that." I assume that by EFI partition you mean the first partition on the drive, which has the ...

Problem Solved

I restored the system to 7/20/20 configuration using timeshift. 56 updates were required. I disconnected the Mint 20 drive so the boot manager on that drive would not get in the way. I confirmed that my Mint 19.3 now boots normally from its efi boot. With the restoration, Mint 19.3 did revert to 4.1...

Re: Will TIMESHIFT restore /boot/efi partition?

"what were you doing in that EFI boot area ?." I didn't know I was! My main OS on that computer is Mint 19.3 on an nvme drive. I was making a test install of Mint 20 on an SSD and I seem to have missed something because it didn't install as a UEFI drive. It did not show up on the list of ...

[SOLVED] Will TIMESHIFT restore /boot/efi partition? [Yes]

In testing a Mint20 install on my UEFI based system, I seemed to have hosed up the boot of my main OS, Mint 19.3 Mate. Will TIMESHIFT restore the boot partition and make Mint 19.3 boot correctly again? Can I just let TIMESHIFT restore the EFI boot? Mint 19.3 is installed on an nvme drive.
