Re: get_iplayer changes! this may help?

24Dec14 UPDATE: it looks like get_iplayer has been updated and is working again, see https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/ubuntu. Note: I'm not convinced it's working ok though as stuff is listed on the website which doesn't appear in get_iplayer, like when I checked there are 4 episodes...

You are a star. Works fine. Saves wading through the bbc pages to find a pid example: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04nypy6/formula-1-2014-the-us-grand-prix-qualifying-highlights which of course is not one of the categories, Would I just use "sport" - I will try it anyway. which he...

Re: Installing Linux on an older laptop

Yeah, sad to see that all the images are DVD, even the 'lightweight' XFCE versions. You have to go back to LM12 to find a live CD. One way, which I have used in the past is 'PLOP' boot loader. A tiny live CD that enables booting from a memory stick even if this is not supported by the computer bios....

Re: Set Program To Start As Root

There are reasons for using Vuescan, scanner not supported by SANE, certain enhancements etc.

I use vuescan and it is a very self contained application.

Works fine from the home partition, no root required.

Re: PAL to NTSC

Removing the regionalisation should not be a problem. I am still using the ancient DVDdecrypter and sometimes DVDshrink + WINE. A very recent DVD, needed back-up for traveling purposes and DVDshrink was the only thing that worked 100%. PAL to NTSC is another matter, as well as frame size, the frame ...

Re: Legacy Grub-Mint/Scientific/Antix- Different behaviour (

Just a question You have windows installed on your second drive (hd1,0)? I know it is not impossible but it is a bit unusual. Traditionally windoze likes to be on the first primary partition of the the first drive. In the distant past I would use the computer 'boot' menu to set the drive for booting...

Re: use synaptic to install a file off of the harddrive

Come on Dave, I am not berating anyone, just pointing out that you did not do your research. the question was could I use synaptic to open a zip file On that basis a simple no would have been the correct reply What if that zip file had contained a .deb package or source code or even a windoze execut...

Re: use synaptic to install a file off of the harddrive

Did anyone bother look at the zip file? It is a java application You have the zip file in Downloads 1. Open a terminal 2. ~$ cd Downloads/ 3. ~/Downloads$ unzip WordBiz18linux.zip 4. ~/Downloads$ cd Wordbiz/ 5. ~/Downloads/Wordbiz$ java -jar wordbiz.jar opens the application whether it works or not ...

first the quote two decrepit old Windows computers..snip...I think this was a 64-bit Cinnamon install. The first printer was a Brother MFC-240C. The second was (I think) a Canon Pixma iP3000. For old hardware, go for a 32 bit OS, on the unlikely event that there is more than 4GB mem a pae kernel wil...

Re: Newbie needs help loading video from Sony Handycam DCR-H

I hate sony with a vengence, AVCH is a pita but for your old Handycam DCR-HC21 I do not think that USB will work with linux. That old handycam as far as I can make out, saves in (some sort of) DVD format. It might not be full DVD, the manual does not say. From the manual, outputs to composite video ...

Looking at this: http://fileformats.archiveteam.org/wiki/Audio_and_Music
and this: http://www.adlibtracker.net/programfaq.php
and this: http://adplug.sourceforge.net

maybe, just maybe, you could get WinAmp to work using WINE, don't know (but I doubt it).

Re: Video Makers/Editors

First thing to note is Brasero is a CD/DVD burning application not a video editor. The above list covers most but kino for example is no longer being developed. A good source of info & links to sites is http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/linux-video-tools Following on, these are apps I have...

Re: Image Editor in Linux?

Trying to be charitable here but did you do any research? For very good reasons, Gimp 2.8.x saves in its native format, .xcf other wise you export Did you look at the documentation? http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-images-out.html#save-export-image For batch processing of images, fire up synaptic an...

Re: coverting video into seperate images.

It could very much depend on the video format, AVCH is a pita. For regular mpeg or avi then the frame rate is usually 30 or 25 fps anyway (NTSC or PAL) and you can dump all the frames using ffmpeg on command line. Have the video clip in an empty directory, open a terminal there and use a command ffm...

you will need to add a delay then minimise (not close) the terminal eg for 5 seconds scrot -d 5 To see all the options in terminal man scrot some options listed for changing save locations etc. are you sure that some of the other screenshot apps do not work, maybe shutter & I know it is KDE but ...

Oh well, best of luck, you will need a load of dev packages probably. You could also try the nightly build deb packages, ubuntu but might work.

Re: Installing Avidemux 2.6.1

You have an archive for compiling and avidemux is not the best to start learning how to compile. You need to be connected to the internet then find Synaptic package manager in your menu system. Enter your password when prompted. Click on the refresh button at the top to refresh the package list then...

@caz I am combining this with your previous post on retaining the Caja settings, it is sort of related. It is possible to save a session but not always the best course of action. I did download some stuff last night, just playing around, and I think that one of the items was the KDE desktop, not sur...

I saw those references as well. There is another http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/index.php?/index.en.html and http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/index.php?/download.en.html The source and/or the 32 bit compiled deb file are the easy ones, the problem comes with the firmware link right at the bottom...

Re: Need help connecting Mint to the internet.

Just had a look at probably the same google links and most are a few years old, maybe the latest kernel supports that hardware. Not much lost except time if you make sure that all is connected and working in M$ then reboot with the live CD(DVD) to see if there is any connection. Maybe have to look a...
