Re: Can't access Windows 8 recovery partition to restore Windows.

Thank you Terrortec, that actually sounds pretty easy. I'll work my way through your steps (probably a little later in the week when work isn't getting in the way of everything) and let you know how I get on. Thanks for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it. Linux Mint forever! Except on ...

Re: Can't access Windows 8 recovery partition to restore Windows.

Hi guys, Thank you so much for the answers so far. Please bear in mind that I'm only a dabbler, and I struggle with anything that's too technically abstruse. First up though, to answer Derek's questions: Important Question #1: Did this partition, /dev/sda5, exist before you installed Linux Mint, or ...

Re: Can't access Windows 8 recovery partition to restore Windows.

Dear Terrortec, thank you for your reply. However, unless I've misunderstood something, I don't believe your suggestion will work because the Windows installation is no longer there. I split the old C: partition into partitions for Linux Mint (/, /home and swap). I left all the other partitions inta...

Can't access Windows 8 recovery partition to restore Windows.

Hi guys, I've got a Toshiba Satellite C50D-A which originally came with Windows 8 and on which I installed Linux Mint 17.2, leaving the original Toshiba recovery partitions untouched. For various reasons, I now wish to restore this machine to Windows (don't worry, this doesn't mean I'm forsaking Lin...

Re: Acer Travelmate - what's up with new versions of Mint?

I will investigate program that when I next get in front of that machine - last night my stepmother came and picked it up so it is no longer readily accessible. However it is running just lovely on Maya, but I'd like to solve the problem and install a newer version at least before Maya stops receivi...

Re: Acer Travelmate - what's up with new versions of Mint?

I'm writing this on the very laptop in question, and it is perfectly happy using Maya Mate (also an LTS, so good for another couple of years). I'm picking that you're on the right track when you talk about graphics drivers. The CPU usage with all the later Linuxes I tried was modest and the RAM use ...

Re: Acer Travelmate - what's up with new versions of Mint?

Hi gmilo2, and thanks, but I'm not sure that you correctly understood me. Swap space was configured in all instances, and I did try Lubuntu, as I stated above. In fact, using any of this year's crop of Ubuntu-based distros that I tried (several in all, and all installed, not just running on the USB ...

Acer Travelmate - what's up with new versions of Mint?

Hi all, I'm presently in charge of my stepmother's 10-year-old Acer Travelmate 2304LCi (1Gb RAM, 1.3GHz Celeron, 40Gb HDD, etc). Needing to get shot of Windows XP, I thought I'd load it up with Mint 17 or 17.1, XFCE version. First of all, the live USB boot was very slow, and once up to the desktop, ...

Re: Why is Firefox so Slow on Mint 15? AND 17?

BUMP!!! I've just upgraded to Mint 17 Cinnamon, with all the accompanying updates, and both Firefox and Chromium are frustratingly slow. Both browsers take ages to start, they're slow to load pages, and scrolling is jerky. The machine is a dual-core AMD something-or-rather, with 4GB of RAM. If I nee...

Re: ASUS Eee 900 help instaling Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon

I've had something similar trying to install Mint 13 Cinnamon on an Asus EeePC netbook. My problem, as far as I can tell, and I'm absolutely no expert, is something to do with the UEFI bios (UEFI is a new system meant to replace BIOS). The little computer is fine running Mint 12, but something is no...

Mint 13 - "error: invalid arch independent ELF magic."

Hi folks, My wife's little Asus 1015BX Seashell netbook has been running Mint 12 a little slow. Some Googling suggested that it might need an update to the Linux kernel, and I decided to go all the way and install Mint 13 (Cinnamon). All went well, but upon reboot I got the message "error: inva...

Three cheers for Clem!

Three cheers for Clem and Cinnamon! Over the weekend I had to get a new computer up and running for an elderly and rather tech-averse friend. His previous Vista computer gave him so much trouble that in order to spare myself a heap of pain I converted him to Linux Mint 9, which, of all distros at th...

Dell 1907FP flicker (+ poor text display on Viewsonic 24")

Dear all, I have a Dell 1907FP LCD monitor that I'm quite fond of. It has begin flickering slightly, momentarily dimming a little and then returning to normal brightness. It doesn't do it all the time, the problem seems to come and go randomly. I have tried both VGA and DVI connections with the same...

Re: Mint 12 connecting network printers

Thanks chaps! I was trying to re-connect my mate's laptop, freshly installed with Mint 12, to the laser printer hung off his Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. I was going mental until I found this thread. System-config-printer saved me! Reconnected instantly!
