Thanks TWA. I just followed your instructions and have it working. My screen has a native res of 1600x900 and I cant find a vga code number for it. There do not seem to be any 16x9 codes, so I used 791 but the sun is not round

Just re-read your first post and realise that your wired connection is also no longer working. I also had this problem which appeared to be related to Networkmanager in my case, and installing wicd resolved matters. Not sure if that would help you though. This may sound elemetary, but have you checked if your wifi is switched on? If your battery ran down completely, the wifi card may need to be re-activated either by a switch or by something like Fn +F9 on the keyboard.

OK, well I fixed the problem by running the live cd, installing wicd and copying the five .deb files to /var/cache/apt/archives in my broken install. Then used aptitude to install wicd, and now all is rosy. Good riddance to network-manager......
