Re: Poll: Desktop environments

As of this moment, I am running Linux Mint 9 on my main machine. When I upgrade I will either upgrade to LM 13 or LMDE! I will probably use Cinnamon most of the time, but I would love to be able to log out and switch to mate or gnome shell. I am trying to get used to gnome shell and Unity but I am h...

Possibility of a Linux virus?

Yesterday I discovered that someone had hacked into my email account and was sending emails to everyone in my contact list! Since most of the contacts in the list were obsolete, I was receiving failure notices. I changed the password of my email account last evening but this morning I noticed anothe...

New install questions

I am running Linux Mint 9 on my main machine. I am considering installing LMDE or Linux Mint 11. I have my "/home" directory on a seperate hard drive. My question is this: if i install LMDE or 11 to the first disk, will that wipe everything from the second hard drive "/home"? I have gigs and gigs of...

Re: How do I cope with lots of Level 3 LMDE updates?

The Level three upgrades are upgrades from Debian Testing repos. If you want your system to keep up with the current state of Debian Testing, then you want to apply all the level three upgrades. If you want to have a stable system with absolutely no breakages or problems, then Install the LMDE iso f...

Re: It's More Than Time for a NEW LMDE Re-spin...

@ddavid123...From what i read, i think what you would be doing is "pointing" your updates toward the mint snapshot updates INSTEAD of using the default which of course is pointing toward debian testing...You would be getting your updates from MINT instead of Debian...So when updates would come down...

Re: It's More Than Time for a NEW LMDE Re-spin...

I think Clem wants to do a whole hoard of improvements before he offers a new iso for LMDE...such as a new optional stable monthly snapshot of updates from Mint instead of using the ones from debian testing (to get much greater stability and far less breakage) improvements to the installer, driver ...

Mint 11 packages on LMDE preview?

I remember weeks before Linux Mint 10 was released, the new LMDE received Mint 10 specific packages to test them out. Almost all the Mint tools that were slated for LM 10 were available for the LMDE users to test. My question is to Clem and the Linux Mint team. Are we the LMDE users going to be able...

Re: Suggestion to Retain LMDE 201012 & 201101 images

I totally agree with this idea! Some people would like to use LMDE, but not the constant updates and occasional breakages. (201012 and (201101) both 32 and 64 bit should be preserved until Wheezy is stable. One possible alternative is to create an LMDE ISO based on Debian 6 stable with only the mint...

I installed jockey-gtk from Ubuntu repository

I decided to try to install jockey-gtk from the Ubuntu Maverick repository. I only needed to download jockey-gtk, jockey-common, and python-xkit. First I installed gdebi by typing "sudo apt-get install gdebi-core" into the terminal. Then I downloaded the needed packages python-xkit-> "http://package...

kernel 2.6.38 in Debian repos!

I was playing with Debian Sid (unstable) tonight and I noticed that the kernel was up for and upgrade! The update manager asked me if I wanted to do a safe upgrade, but knowing me I said no! I then had to check all the packages that were automatically unchecked and proceeded with the upgrade. After ...

Re: change program install directory

I do understand that is not the way Linux does things. All I am saying is that after 20+ years of the same directory structure, a little change would be beneficial. If it is not feasible to have separate install directory in the user's directory, then why not move the "/usr" directory to the "/home"...

change program install directory

I posted this on the community website, but I could not post the screenshots. "Instead of installing user apps to the "/usr" directory, install them into "/home/user/Programs" and or "/home/Programs". When a user installs an app like say chromium, why should it be installed in "/usr". By installing ...

Clicked the touchpad tab and selected "Enable mouse clicks with touchpad" Is the live-DVD you spoke of the Chris...

LMDE (201012)

I installed the 64 bit version of LMDE on my laptop today, and I must say i like! I previously had Windows 7 and Linux Mint 9 (via windows mint installer) installed. I deleted Linux Mint 9 and did the usual disk checks before and after resizing the Windows partition. Installation went quickly and wi...

Gnome or Unity for Mint 11

With all the talk about Ubuntu 11.04 switching from Gnome to Unity as the default desktop, one wonders what desktop Linux Mint 11 will have. I personally think this is a bad decision for Canonical to make, especially if Unity is as unthemable and unstable as I have been hearing! What is the point of...
