Re: how do I access a standard UK Qwerty KB layout: Mint 18

Scrap that!
Finally managed to have my selected Kb layout applied.
Not what you would call "User friendly" is it?
Having selected the required layout, you must then drag it to the top of the list in order for it to be executed, otherwise the dratted US layout prevails!

how do I access a standard UK Qwerty KB layout: Mint 18

I'm running Mint 18 from a USB stick and cannot achieve a "standard" UK qwerty layout. Particularly regards the transposition of " and @ when I access the Kb settings, there are myriad options for "English UK" layouts, most of which I've never heard of, and all of those I've tried seem to make no ch...

HP G56-100SA - how to get Bluetooth working?

I've been "gifted" a couple of laptops, the one in the title without any HDD, and a Toshiba Satellite L750D-14R. This was complete except for a battery, the only problem was that it had been abandoned by the original owner and no one knew the password! It had a COA Sticker on the base for W7 Premium...

Re: Seems Mint 17 Cinnamon "Qiana" doesn't exist!

Thanks Webtest, I used the USB formatting tool and the creation tool included with Mint17 from a DVD on the Optiplex 'cos the burner on the laptop is goosed! I was considering using Terminal and the "dd" command following a YT video, but the jest that dd stood for destroy disk rather undermined my c...

Re: Seems Mint 17 Cinnamon "Qiana" doesn't exist!

I'm just plain lazy! Have an OptiPlex GX 280 which was running Mint 17 32bit "installed" until it fouled up so rather than unload my stuff, re-install and put it back, I just run from a live DVD and mount the HDD as and when I need files. Just been gifted an old HP G56-100SA Notebook with no Drive a...

They are, if you tick the box during installation.
Does "during installation" mean at the point of burning the ISO to USB, as I really wanted to just run the OS from a USB, The Laptop doesn't have a HDD at present!
If so, I seem to have missed that option. :?

Re: Seems Mint 17 Cinnamon "Qiana" doesn't exist!

Thanks karlchen, currently playing with Sarah! (Mint 18), Not sure that I like it as much as Qiana :D Alas, this distro didn't include VLC but despite the small size of my USB stick, managed to download and install it though I expect it will evaporate when I shut down! Bit disappointed in that as it...

Re: Seems Mint 17 Cinnamon "Qiana" doesn't exist!

Thanks rado84,I suspect that newer distros would have a larger payload, so I thought anything bigger than what I have might be a bit tight on space on this 2GB stick!

Seems Mint 17 Cinnamon "Qiana" doesn't exist!

I'm confused! (don't take much) I'm currently running the above from a 2GB stick on a lappy which has no HDD, all was sweet but then, due to a power problem, some files on the stick seem to have become corrupted VLC no longer loads. I thought I'd try re-installing on the stick and so headed to Distr...

CCTV System only supports "Pre-Win10" IE. Help!

I have bought what might be a bit of a "Pig in a poke" as we say in the UK! I'm hoping that you guys can help a Linux Newbie to sort this with some lateral thinking and your undoubted superior knowledge of Linux. I'm a Linux newbie of some 7 years "tinkering"! I currently have an old Dell OptiPlex G...

Re: Logitech mice and Mint 17

Yay! my mouse lives!
Didn't think the little begger would be able to sniff out the PC in the other room!
Suppose it has more to do with it only being able to "pair" with one receiver at a time though.

Re: Logitech mice and Mint 17

Thanks guys, that gives me hope! There are two things which might impinge upon this problem: I'm currently running "Mate" from a live DVD as my current install has corrupted and I haven't had time to back up my data. The more likely culprit being that I've just noticed that this mouse, which is also...

Logitech mice and Mint 17

Having trouble getting this mouse (M185) to communicate with the receiver, pointer only responds to the USB mouse which is still plugged in however, a message appeared on screen saying "mouse battery is low". Whilst this wasn't true, it shows that the receiver seems to be recognised, ...I changed th...

Re: Help with Salvaging Files from Dead PVR

Thanks Mute Ant, I'm a bit confused, is it the HDD which is damaged, or the Firmware within the PVR which has corrupted the drive's content? If it's the drive then I would not bother trying to salvage the content as this would be way beyond my capabilities. Assuming the PVR Files to be lost, the fac...

Help with Salvaging Files from Dead PVR

I have a Vestel T825 based PVR which I'm told does not encrypt its files and so I was hoping that I might be able to rescue the files which may have survived the ultimate demise of the machine. Some months ago this machine when brought from standby, advised that it couldn't find a HDD! Eventually af...

Hi Superannuated, I guess from your username that you and I both work for the same firm! It's amazing what you miss when you think that you are being receptive!
