Re: Gnome user switching to XFCE

GNOME programs will work in Xfce. Both use Gtk, as does LXDE.

Re: Ubuntu 11.04 Released

GNOME 2 is dead. Best to just go to Xfce. Mint's version has all of the useful GNOME stuff.

Maintaining GNOME 2 can only be workable for a year or so.

Just get it over with and go to Xfce.

Re: Ubuntu 11.04 Released

I know that there will be things to work out in any release but the ubuntu forum is loaded with issues. Why do they release a distro that has so many problems? Ubuntu is famous for that. So Clem and co. can fix them and send them back upstream ;) They're not interested in anything coming from Mint.

Re: What's with the hate for Gnome Shell? Give it a chance!

Well then we will just have to wait and see what happens. My bet is after GNOME Shell is released that the sun will rise, birds will sing and most of us will still be using our computers. Enjoy Agreed indeed. And for those who enjoy GNOME Shell, blessings be upon them. I'll miss GNOME but still don...

Re: What's with the hate for Gnome Shell? Give it a chance!

I posted this last October and it still works for me. :D Every time there has been a significant change in GNOME there has been an accompanying cacophony of complaints. Not so surprisingly its still here doing a fine job and and moving forward to a new version. My guess is a few years down the road...

Re: What's with the hate for Gnome Shell? Give it a chance!

Sure, Unity and Shell might be fine for tablets and I'd buy one with either installed.

But at this point Unity doesn't work with the virtual keyboard let alone show any sign of working on tablets, smartphones, etc.

All they do is break the desktop.

Re: What's with the hate for Gnome Shell? Give it a chance!

I do not hate Shell or Unity. I loathe and despise them. I primarily use keybindings and GNOME Do to get things done. I cannot waste time pretending that pictures represent meaningful points in space and direct a picture precisely at those points with a mouse unless there's a good reason to. I have ...

Re: Xfce edition based on Debian

Well, I think LMDE with Xfce would be a lot easier for everyone. Now Clem and Ikey will not only have to Mintify but de-Ubuntuize and un-GNOME the GUI.

Re: When will Xfce 4.8 be available?

I have been following this but don't expect it to come into Testing before mid or late April. It will be worth the wait to have a robust version that one can just keep using until Xfce 5 (about to years from now).

Re: Fix Broken Packages

Just run

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and that will clear it. There was something faerked up about some of the servers and the mint packages.

Just a guess and it's a GUI-ish thing but start it, click the preferences and change the icon to something else. Even change it back if you want. This might kick something in the nethers.

Re: monitor goes black after updates

Wow, after installing today's updates, I'm now having the same issue. My monitor would go dark for a couple seconds, every 12 seconds. I tried wille42's suggestion below - Change your Mirror for updates you might want to do sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade And now the timing has changed....

Should I install the Nvidia nonfree driver for my kernel (2.6.32-5-686)? I think the Nouveau driver is the problem.
