Wow ... this thread is still going
I installed Mint 17.3 Mate today and was looking for applications and remembered this thread.
I noticed the original link was updated in 2013 from 2008.
Also, great to see the others have added more links.

Re: reason many will never want Linux in general.
The distro I have used the longest is Mint xfce 5 ... it does everything I need at home. I am still using it today  Installed Mint 7 64bit but could not get the HDMI sound working on my HDTV, gave up and installed windows 7. I was surprised that media player supports xVid's out of the box. ...

HDMI sound on Nvidia 8200
I installed Mint 7 64bit on a Asus M3N78=VM which has onboard 8200. I used the nvidia 800 driver and got my 1920 x 1080 res on my TV going but so far no sound thru HDMI. I went into the sound area and tried using HDMI sound for music and movies but no matter what I have tried so far, no sound when I...

Re: Linux Mint 5 Elyssa XFCE Community Edition
The enhancements found in this distro are amazing. The ability to open the terminal wherever you want, to mount and unmount an iso, to check the md5sum, run as root just by right clicking is very useful. Other winners for me include a working version of Brasero. This app is broken in ubuntu for me o...

Re: Network issue with Intel D945GCLF mobo
That app is really cool Husse but I can't make it work.
It freezes while it's rebuilding the kernel ...
I also tried reinstalling XFCE and attempted from a fresh install.
I tried 3 different times and it froze at different places .. oh well.

Re: Network issue with Intel D945GCLF mobo
It looks like the kernel 2.6.24 does not support this Ethernet chip.
How can one update the kernel to 2.6.25 ?

Have you looked at the power manager? Make sure that it doesn't turn off the screen. Can you provide more info on this please ? Does this advise go for Emerald, XFCE or both ? Is Compiz fusion more trouble than it's worth right now ? I'm up and running on a fresh install, used Envy to install Nvidi...

Re: Need to login everytime the screensaver kicks in ...
Walked away from the system for a while and it was frozen when I returned ...
Hmm maybe I should have restarted x when I made the change.
Took a few tries before I was able to boot back to the desktop.
I'll give it another go.
