Re: Point Linux OS vs Linux Mint 15 MATE.
I've been a long time Mint user of both the Ubuntu and the Debian based (LMDE) versions. I have to say that Point Linux, based on Debian stable, is a superb distro. It's fast, easily configurable, uses MATE as the DE and is well supported by the developer (and of course it's based on the rock solid ...

Re: Point Linux & SparkyLinux (based on Debian)
Point Linux works well for me. Debian Wheezy plus Mate plus its own repository for non-free packages. Very nice.
And I'm a long time LMDE user (which I love).

Re: Linux Mint 14 RC
I am having an intermittent problem with the system getting a black screen and not getting to the MDM.... I looked at the settings in MDM and made a couple of changes but I am not sure that is where the problem is. Still investigating the issue. This has been a reported/known issue for the last cou...

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD
I've managed to somewhat improve font quality with a simple script which I've posted here . Need a few testers now to confirm it works not only for me. :) Monsta, FYI: I backed out this change, http://noz3001.wordpress.com/2011/07/01/ubuntu-font-rendering-on-debian-wheezy/ , and restored to the ori...

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD
I wonder if this method works: http://noz3001.wordpress.com/2011/07/01/ubuntu-font-rendering-on-debian-wheezy/ It involves just extracting part of ubuntu deb file to /etc/fonts This is the first thing I did after installing UP5 and noticed an immediate improvement in font rendering (looks just like...

Re: Linux Mint 13 "Maya" RC released!
My disappearing MDM disappearing login issue resurfaced even though I didn't upgrade the kernel or do any updates. I replaced the MDM login manager with LightDM and the default Mint background now shows at login without any Ubuntu remnants. Specifically, I installed lightDM, lightDM-gtk-greeter and...

Re: Linux Mint 13 "Maya" RC released!
In reference to the MDM conflict with the proprietary Nvida driver(s), I found that removing the driver, upgrading to the latest kernel listed in Synaptic (3.2.0-24) and then reinstalling the "post-release" Nvida driver ( not the recommended one) appears to have solved the problem. Two da...

Re: Linux Mint 13 "Maya" RC released!
@kmb42vt Yes. I've experienced the exact issue you have - "the login screen appearing for a second and then going to a blank screen during a normal boot/reboot". My system is very similar to yours by the way: Intel Core 2 Quad, 8.0 GB DDR2, 500 GB HDD, 320 GB HDD, Nvidia GT 210 w/1.0 GB DD...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments
I've been using Cinnamon in Mint 12 Main and its performance is great. It's modern looking and very snappy though a bit unpolished (which is to be expected from such a new DE). I'm also running Cinnamon in LMDE 201204 and its performance is acceptable but not nearly as responsive as in the Main edit...

Re: [Known upstream bug] LMDE UP4: Printer properties error
I have a Brother MFC 8890DW with the same problem. It's described here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-filters/+bug/951627 The fix described in this link as well as in a previous post in this thread is replacing cups-filters 1.0.2-1 with cups-filters 1.0.5-1 from unstable (dependency ...

Re: Accidentally Changed my Home Icon (Mint 12, Cinn 1.3.1)
In answer to my own question, restoring the default Home icon involved right clicking on my changed home icon > properties > click on icon image in basic tab > navigating to usr/share/icons/Mint-X/places/48 > highlighting folder_home.svg and choosing open. That changed the Home icon on my desktop to...

SOLVED:Accidentally Changed Home Icon (Mint 12, Cinn 1.3.1)
I mistakenly changed my Home icon - it no longer is the default "house" icon. Functionally it works fine but how do I get the default Home icon back? I tried right clicking on the changed home icon and then chose properties > clicked on the icon image > revert but that didn't work...the sa...

Re: Another DE option for Mint 12 - Cinnamon
I installed Cinnamon yesterday and everything looked fine. Turned on my PC this morning and booted into Mint 12 Cinnamon desktop. The taskbar and mint menu are "not right" anymore (SEE LINK TO IMAGE). I tried logging in/out, restarting and uninstalling/reinstalling Cinammon. Anyway, my des...

[SOLVED] Thunar Freezing in LMDE Xfce 201108
I found this fix on another forum: "Go to /usr/share/gvfs/mounts/network.mount and change the "AutoMount" value to false. Reboot." Thunar now opens immediately each and every time (especially the first time after a restart). The caveat for this fix is that Thunar will no longer a...

Re: Thunar Freezing in LMDE Xfce 201108
I have both Mint 9 Xfce and Mint Xfce 201108 and cannot re-produce your problem. :? Do you have any network drives in Places in the left pane ? I have no network drives nor are any being displayed. If I open Thunar as root from the command line, I get no delay at all. From what I've read and what y...

[SOLVED] Thunar Freezing in LMDE Xfce 201108
I misstated my issue. Let me try again: When opening Thunar for the first time after a restart, it take about 30 seconds to become responsive. The issue is described here: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic/13758/thunar-slow-starting-for-xfce-48/ and http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&a...
