I have also dealt with this. I finally got wireless working over the summer by following the instructions here http://www.aeonity.com/frost/getting-dell-wifi-work-ubuntu-910-karmic-koala I am using Linux Mint 6 by the way. edit: I just did an install of mint 9 and the same instructions worked for me.
