UGee tablet

Hi all, long time no see. I appreciate that this is not so much a Mint problem as a "Why does Mint work" problem. I was a former Mint aficionado, and I jumped ship a couple of years ago. I will still always plug Mint to new Linux users. Anyhoo, I switched to Arch, and I plugged in a Ugee g...

Teamviewer

Hey all (long time no see). My parents are still on Mint (32 bit IIRC, no point asking them, I installed it two years ago - and count myself lucky that they are still using it). Anyway, they've hit a bit of a problem that's best solved with remote access. I figured teamviewer was the easiest way to ...

Re: "adduser: only root may add a user or group to the syste

When you say you are logged in as root, do you mean as the user that you created when you installed mint? If so, that's not root. You can add users with:

Code: Select all

sudo adduser xxxxx

Note: you can install gnome-system-tools to get the GUI option back

Re: Can't pull down email from yahoo using Thunderbird

I've been using yahoo mail with TB for years no problem, though their instructions seem incomplete. Try these settings: Server name: pop.mail.yahoo.com Port: 110 Username whatevercomesbefore "@yahoo.com" (i.e. leave "@yahoo....." off) Connection security: None Authentication Meth...

US Users - e-petition

Thought I'd mention, someone having seen my post regarding the UK petition in another forum I frequent has posted a similar petition on the US Gvt website, so you brothers and sisters from across the pond can get in on the act, too :) https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/petitions/!/petition/migrate-linux-ba...

UK residents

we all know that the UK Government has dallied over using Linux for government business, but they appear to stall regularly and only ever include a small subset of functions in their considerations. So, I've started a e-petition on the government website calling for a full review with a view to migr...

Re: Failed at the first hurdle, or two.!

You could also try installing via the terminal and see if it gives you more output that may point to the error. To do that, and assuming that you downloaded the file to your Desktop: cd ~/Desktop sudo dpkg -i opera-next_12.00.1272_i386.deb Change the first line to wherever you downloaded the .deb fi...

Re: Improved Audio

I agree that pulse is a completely mixed bag and often a dog. It's limitations are most noticable when you need to run a jack server, in which case setting up pulse to work with it can be a complete nightmare. That's not the only problem with it, though. Many programs running using wine will stutter...

Re: Virtual Box and USB recognition

If you have installed the extension pack, then you are halfway there.

Go to users and groups, manage groups, and add yourself to the "vboxusers" group. Logout and login again, and it should work.

Re: US Assassin Drones dump Windows shift to Linux Drone Con

The alternative is that they use hardware controlled by virus infested Windows which will potentially blow their own troops up instead of someone else's troops. You will never stop governments killing, and your proposal would simply change the victim.

Re: UEFI: Windows 8 will ban Linux running on ARM

I saw this over at LQ yesterday. My reaction upon reading - well, I didn't really have one. There's nothing surprising in it whatsoever. What will I do about it? Nothing. I don't buy MS stuff anyway, so I won't be buying a Windows phone, Windows tablet or anything else that says Windows on it. I bui...

Re: Strangest Problem Ever, experts only...

Best guess. You have installed using wubi previously. wubi doesn't write a native grub boot, but rather writes a wubi boot which chainloads a gru boot if you select Linux, hence the two boot screens that you have experienced before. This time when you installed, you did it "properly", whic...

Re: Compiz eye candy and ATI issues

The 3D cube is usually activated by pressing and holding ctr-alt and then left mouse button and move the mouse to rotate. This can be changed in compiz settings. I don't use gnome 3, but I understand that there may be some problems with fglrx and gnome 3. ATI say that the 12.1 update due at some poi...

Re: screen goes blank with no way to recover

It should wake up on a keypress, but try this anyway to see if it stops it blanking. In a terminal:

Code: Select all

xset s off

If it works, simply add it to startup.

Is it just me. Ever since I started playing with sed I find myself relishing those little challenging questions that pop up on forums for a sed solution to some problem, simply because it's a bit like a game and a brain teaser. Re: "Faux" Grub 2 SUX! Questions, Questions ......

You can go back to grub legacy if you want - see here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=44056&p=269710&hilit=revert+to+grub+legacy#p269710 To answer your specific question, you can completely disable entries in grub 2 by editing /boot/grub/grub.cfg. However, direct editing...

Re: HOw too recover from a botched video driver

If your computer is completing boot, and remains a black screen:

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

This will disable the restricted drivers and should get you back to a desktop.
