I'm very pleased with Gnome 3/Shell overall. Lack of configurability is a major drawback, but hopefully that will improve over time. You can in fact put the minimize and maximize buttons back if you want to. True it's tricky to figure out how...I think you can do it with the "advanced settings tweak...
