Re: Need help removing password prompts
Besides obscurity, part of what makes linux more secure is the fact that your normal every day user doesn't have a lot of access outside of your home folder. This is by design. OP, how about a different approach... because you may actually have a problem. Give some examples of what you're trying to ...

Re: I am so very stuck Dx
For those searching I'll add this solution I found while putting mint on my fathers old HP laptop: It had the physical switch and linux won't pay any attention to it, common problem. Out of pure dumb luck, I rebooted into windows (XP) and enabled it with the switch. When I rebooted into Mint, IT STA...

Re: Mint and Linux definately not a replacement for XP
I am tinkering with Linux from 2000 or so, that time "Caldera" released their first working version of linux then(May be I don't remember that it was not their first release I got first CD of any other OS than 'windows'. It came with a magazine called 'developerIQ'). I have been trying li...

Re: mate or xfce?
Parents old laptop. HP Single core (don't remember speed), 2GB RAM. MATE is kind of pokey. XFCE is ok but still pauses in places (the HD is slooow on this thing). XP, btw, after all the updates, is pretty much unusable, unless you have monumental patience.

Re: I screwed up while installing Linux Mint. Please help
How is that possible? I made sure that I used my C drive to create the partition. My USB drive was only 2 GB. He's not talking about the partition you put the OS on. He's referring to where GRUB was installed to. GRUB is the boot loader. You may have put the OS where you intended but GRUB on the us...

Re: Is there "Readyboost" for Linux Mint?
I'm redoing my parents old machine and readyboost helps Vista on boot only (prebuilt dell, I suspect the HD is very slow). Mint, on the other hand, uses so little memory and loads up so fast I've never wanted any type of usb caching.

Re: Installation of Linux Mint 17 from Live USB crashes
Edit: I fixed mine. At DVD boot menu I hit a key and then e to edit, IIRC. Mine just needed nomodeset added (google nomodeset if you're confused). I don't remember the exact keystrokes but at some point I was booted to DVD in a very low res mode. Driver manager added a video driver and the install w...

Re: Missing scroll bar buttons? LM17 MATE & Cinn
Scrollbar buttons aren't there anymore in the Mint-X theme. If you want them, install some other theme that has them. Ahh, so they removed them then. I was wondering what happened. I think I'll just leave it. Didn't use them all that much. Just thought I may have caught a bug. Guess not. Thanks for...

Bumping this once, hope that's OK.
How about this:
Does anyone NOT have this problem.
I mean, I guess I should report this as a bug?

[Solved] Missing scroll bar buttons? LM17 MATE & Cinn
In any program that has a scroll bar, (like firefox, caja, nemo) the buttons at top and bottom of the scroll bar aren't there. This is on two separate Dell laptops, one running MATE (32 bit) and the other running Cinnamon (64 bit). These are two fresh installs of LM17 but I think one is an upgraded ...

Just did this last night. Had 3 OS's and a swap partition. Just told it what to format and where to lay mint, didn't make any changes for the swap partition and it's using the old swap partition just fine.

Re: computer freezes after running 1/2 hour
I've had times where just reseating it (pulling the memory out and putting it back in) fixed things like this. Worth a shot, can't really get any worse.

Re: Why use Linux??? (real newbie question)
I run it on a 7 year old laptop that came with XP. Upped the RAM, new SSD and Mint, it's given it new life. The other reason is that I'm just a geek. I like messing with computers. Windows gets boring after a while, Linux gives me an interesting problem to solve every once in a while. There are some...

Re: Network DHCP question
Look it is not a LinuxMint issue , it is not una problema tampoco , you just need to reconfigure your modem. We do not know your modem brand but ussually you access with 192.168.1.1 the password may be admin , just check in the back of your modem. Enable DHCP. Do not forget to save. You will be onl...

Re: Mount COmmand
From: man mount For most types all the mount program has to do is issue a simple mount(2) system call, and no detailed knowledge of the filesystem type is required. For a few types however (like nfs, nfs4, cifs, smbfs, ncpfs) ad hoc code is necessary. The nfs, nfs4, cifs, smbfs, and ncpfs filesystem...

This is pertinent:

There's a bit in there about figuring out WHY that port might be open that you might want to investigate.
