Re: Curiosity: why do so many people only use Linux on old hardware?

I started using Linux Mint back in 2009 because I simply couldn't afford Windows also, I hated how Windows became increasingly user-hostile with activations and stuff like that. I like how generally-user friendly Linux is. No activations, no keycodes, etc. when installing. Most of my computers were ...

Yeah since I play a lot of Windows-only games. I exclusively use PlayOnLinux/SteamPlay nowadays, though.

Re: Ghosts of days gone by (Ancient Linux)

I started with Mandrake 7.0 which I purchased as a boxed set at a store (it might have been CompUSA). It was horrible to install, dependency h*ll, and just unfriendly. But it had some great features, I could boot into Gnome, KDE, Windowmaker, etc. It came with almost every DE/Window manager ever ma...

What's the deal with PulseAudio?

Like why is it a thing at all? Every time I install Linux I need to go through uninstalling it and sound quality immediately improves, there's no sound system that for some ridiculous reason uses CPU, etc. - I never had PulseAudio work well and that's since 2009, on 3 different computers. Now not on...

Re: Why are programs allowed to overtake processor and memory to the point of stalling the system?

Though I generally wonder why it's allowed to happen. This has been the situation with operating systems since ... well, since the beginning. What usually happens is programs (can be any program, not just browsers) request resources and the O/S delivers - that's it's job. If memory is requested and...

Re: [solved] Problems with getting CanoScan LIDE 400 to work on LM19 Tara

It turned out that I had to get the most up to date repository for SANE following instructions from here. It was certainly a frustrating experience. It's the second time this year I had to intervene with SANE to get a scanner working and the scanning program provided by the producer is an absolute j...

[solved] Problems with getting CanoScan LIDE 400 to work on LM19 Tara

I just bought the scanner and tried running its official scanning program but it's simply unacceptable. It can save files only as 90% quality .jpg or pdf, has no resolution settings - basically basic functionality is missing. But Xsane, simple-scan and skanlite find no devices despite that it suppos...

Re: Problem with ScanJet 5300C

Found a solution in this thread . For some reason I missed it when I was searching before. It turned out that I have to also uncomment the option disable-gamma-table so that it would work. So my configuration file looks like this: option disable-gamma-table #option disable-calibration #option force-...

Re: Problem with ScanJet 5300C

Hello Morgan Krieg, unfortunately you haven't written what Linux Version you use. I use LM 19.1 Cinnamon. On the sane-project site in the list of supported devices it is shown, that your scanner is supported by the sane-avision backend. You can click it and read what is written about it. On my syst...

[solved ]Problem with ScanJet 5300C

Just bought used one. According to sane site it should be supported but I'm having trouble with it. skanlite is unable to find any device. Xsane detects it but is unable to scan. When I run sane-find-scanner -v -v I get: This is sane-find-scanner from sane-backends 1.0.27 # sane-find-scanner will no...

Re: Steam now lets you play Windows games on Linux

I find it much less able to run games than PlayOnLinux + newest version of Wine.

Out of 3 games that worked on steam installed on Wine that I tried so far, all 3 can't be played and crash.

Re: Why are programs allowed to overtake processor and memory to the point of stalling the system?

System Monitor sure shows that in a hurry. I have more trouble with the browser trying to load a bad page, than anything else. cpu#3 goes to 100% and game over. I hit ^Q and wait, and eventually it exits. Yeah, it's also mainly browser for me. Especially with YouTube lately. Though I generally wond...

Why are programs allowed to overtake processor and memory to the point of stalling the system?

I find it bewildering that stuff like that can actually happen. One would think that there would be some kind of a mechanism that would prevent programs from making the system unresponsive.

Re: Linux Gaming

I miss serious wargames on Linux. Have to run them through Wine unfortunately and sometimes getting bugs from it. LM19 Mate scanning, resolution problems.

I can't set 100dpi resolution, only 75, 150, 300, 600, 1200, 2400. I need to scan at 100dpi. When I was using Kubuntu 16.04, I could simply type desired resolution . Now I need to pick from menu. Is it because of new scanner or is there some change in the scanning software in LM19? Is there any way ...

Re: Scanmagic 1200 UB no longer detected after installing LM19 Mate

Thanks for the replies. I tried them all but it still doesn't detect it.

I realised that the most probable reason is that it's dead, IIRC it would usually power up when system boots. My previous computer got motherboard fried by dying PSU, so I guess it must have killed it too.
