Thanks for the advice Vinod!
But I went and installed Mint Nadia Cinnamon. It allowed me to put Grub in the right place, now all is good. After upgrading the kernel, I tried using rEFInd to boot into Mint directly, but I couldn't get it to work, so I'm still using Grub.

Re: Keyboard shortcuts not working ( mint 14 cinnamon )
It doesn’t seem to resolve my particular problem of trying to assign shortcuts using the Windows, or Super, key . In LM13’s Cinnamon edition, that was still possible. Or is it something about your workaround that prevents that from happening? I have the same problem. It looks like no one uses the w...

Re: How to boot LMDE on an UEFI-based pc?
I've been trying to install LMDE on my iMac. LMDE still uses the 3.2 kernel, I'm trying to figure out how to update or replace my kernel...

Re: LMDE on Macbook Pro 5,1--no bootable device
I'm having a similar issue on my Imac5,1. I can't seem to get GRUB to install on the correct partition. LMDE installer only gives me SDA & SDA1 as options for GRUB, but my / directory is on SDA3. (I tried changing boot flag on SDA3 to "boot" & "GRUB bios", followed by re-...

Thanks for the clarification, I'll keep on with the updates! (That gnome-terminal thing is really weird though , never seen any window do that...)

[SOLVED]Gnome packages in MintXFCE?!?
Hi all, After a bunch of updates, I noticed some weirdness, particularly, that my terminal is gnome-terminal, and when I open it, it starts out looking normal, but then the window shrinks itsself to a small size. But that's not my main concern. When I looked in Synaptic to uninstall it and replace i...

@ vrkalak: Sorry, I just automatically used the "attachment" forum tool, as I would on any other forum. Come to think of it, these forums do get really slow sometimes. I'll use a 3rd party pic host from now on... @ Zach: Thanks! I also posted a minty green desktop & Conky a page back. ...

Is this because they designed it specifically as a Gnome-panel replacement? Would be nice if it were DE agnostic...

Re: Why not Ubuntu?
Thought some of you might find this interesting: http://www.ainer.org/news/ubuntu-11-04-natty-narwhal-or-linux-mint-11-katya 3 things he said really put me off: 1)Ubuntu is more polished. How would that be possible, unless he's claiming that Mint is actually mucking up Ubuntu. 2)Too many choices ar...

Re: Why not Ubuntu?
These discussions over the last few days have actually been very enlightening. Like I mentioned, I first started learning about Linux and it's ideals and philosophy, and why I should use it and why I shouldn't, and chose Ubuntu based on their supposed philosophy. My eyes have been opened, and I have...

Re: Why not Ubuntu?
Well, when you're as big as M$, you have a lot to lose, so a certain level of QA is really just a practical business decision. If they ignored the backlash from Vista, it would have seriously hurt the company. I'm not sure how much Apple listens to it's customers, they fix things when they're critic...

Re: Gnome user switching to XFCE
Heh heh, I tried installing AWN from the repos last night, and it tried to pull in a ton of Gnome desktop packages, including Nautilus! This seemed strange to me, but regardless, I cancelled the install.

Re: Canonical Alienates Their Major Asset
@MALsPa & Robin: You two are absolutely correct, my assumptions are just that, assumptions. The more I think about it, the more curious I become about Canonical's structure, how much manpower is dedicated to tech, how much is marketing, how many enterprise installs are there, etc? But I still wa...

Re: Why not Ubuntu?
The whole thing about the colors, though, kinda puzzles me. Default appearances don't matter to me at all, and I don't quite understand why people have ever had issues with the "brown," or whatever colors Ubuntu currently uses on the default desktop. But it certainly seems to bug a lot of...

Thanks for the info! I wouldn't want Nautilus being pulled in as a dependency on my XFCE setup!

Re: Canonical Alienates Their Major Asset
My impressions are that: a) Ubuntu wants to become a dominant presence on the desktop, particularly by enticing Windows users to switch. (This goes against the ol' "Linux is NOT Windows" article, which states that this is in fact an undesirable situation.) b)To reiterate exploder's excelle...

Re: Why not Ubuntu?
Ubuntu was my introduction to Linux, so I guess it was good enough to make me stick with Linux. I like Ubuntu as a base, particularly for the PPAs and general availability of a wide variety of cutting edge software. I don't like Canonical's development for the desktop; recent initiatives that have p...

Re: Gnome user switching to XFCE
Isn't Linux just Linux, regardless of your DE/WM? I thought "Gnome apps" or "KDE apps" were meant to integrate better with their respective DEs, but would still run fully functional on any Linux system...

Re: Sharing some minor tips - Mint 11
For some reason, Compiz is working fine for me OOTB, (with the exception of a few plugins, which has always been the case with my old vid card). How is Mutter compared to Compiz in terms of functionality? Is it as limited as Metacity or XFCE, (simple shadows and transparency), or does it add window ...
