SSH reverse tunneling
I've been trying to test reverse ssh tunneling over my local network, but I'm not getting anywhere. In fact, it is just opening up a regular ssh connection. I'm running the command from one machine (the one I want to connect to from a different machine): ssh -R 2222:localhost:22 kent@192.168.0.100 a...

Re: titlebar gone, can't minimize/maximize/etc
Got a little behind with classes having just started, trying to keep up. Just got a chance to really look this over. Great to see this many responses. I used the compiz fusion icon to switch to Xfwm4 and so far it seems to be working. Is this sort of thing a long term answer? I haven't given much th...

Re: titlebar gone, can't minimize/maximize/etc
Got the icon, and it helps a little bit, at least now running winowed programs are showing up in the taskbar. I can use that to minimize, maximize/unmaximize, but I still can't move windows around, and the titlebar still isn't showing up. What is next?

titlebar gone, can't minimize/maximize/etc
Running mint13 xfce 32-bit, and my titlebars on my windows are gone, like I stated in the title. Not sure if it is relevent, but I just did the latest round of updates, installed and ran conky, installed (and have sinced removed) feh. If you need any further info, just ask and I'll do the best I can...

Re: iptables commonly blocked/allowed ports/services, etc.
Well that is a good start.
Now about those specific ports that normally remain open. The only one I've really found that I can say with any certainty should be "always open" is port 53, for DNS. Are there any others that are recommended to be open >95% of the time?

iptables commonly blocked/allowed ports/services, etc.
I'm looking into learning iptables and I had a few questions: Unless I explicitely save, everything will be lost during a restart, correct? Is there a way I can allow something (like SSH) over a wifi connection of a specific name (only allow that incoming traffic when I'm connected to my own home ro...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments
KDE for my main desktop with screen space, as I am trying to do Qt programming. Fluxbox for my netbook where screen space is an issue. I'm using 11.10 Kubuntu with fluxbox right now and I can't wait to get something with fluxbox that reliably handles networking, browsing, and shutting down (right no...

Re: desktop setup script
KDE does .desktop files, when you first put a .desktop file in the folder it usually asks you if it is ok the first time you run it, perhaps this caused issues?

Re: desktop setup script
.desktop files are just text files with entries for the name, command, icon, description, etc? Is it possible to make a new .desktop file, write the needed fields to it, then copy the file and add the specifics for each predetermined application? Seems needlessly complicated for something so simple,...

Re: desktop setup script
What kind of extras could I get rid of by doing that? I would still want some KDE components, (KATE, K3B, Konsole) but I don't need the option of logging in to KDE if we went with LXDE like that. Would it be beneficial to use another login manager? If we were to go this route I'd see it as: 1) post-...

Re: desktop setup script
I was pushing for them to use LXDE mint, but our advisor really wants a 64-bit OS, not to get off topic, but I don't suppose there are plans for a mint 13 LXDE 64-bit?

desktop setup script
I'm trying to make a script to do post install tasks for desktops used by the computer club on campus. So far I've managed to get my script to install/update popular software (Eclipse and monodevelop IDEs, libreoffice, firefox, various compilers, etc) but really I don't have much experience scriptin...

Re: 'freeze' after system idle
I didn't know it was the timestamp, I was hoping it was some type of error code. According to the software manager compiz isn't installed. Searching 'compiz' in synaptic shows only one installed package, lidecoration0. I'm checking out the dmesg file in /var/log/ (there is a log file viewer program?...

'freeze' after system idle
just installed mint lxde 11 32-bit on a T43 thinkpad and after the system idles for some time the screensaver gives way to a lot of text, with lines prefixed with [104628.736008], and I can't find any way to restore the GUI without doing a manual reboot.

Re: system settings -> printer configuration issue
thank you, I looked at the other things that would be affected if I removed that python package and noticed a package "system-config-printer-kde (4:4.5.5-0ubuntu2)", which I reinstalled and now it works.

If I can't get it to work by normal means, is there an alternate way I could get this printer working? Maybe a browser or command line interface?

Solved: system settings -> printer configuration issue
Am running M10 KDE 64-bit, and am trying to add a network printer (my old printer I could just plug in and it worked), but pulling up "printer configuration" under "system settings" I get the following: The service 'Printer Configuration' does not provide an interface 'KCModule' ...

Re: no network interface with Julia
I think there be more to it than a KDE issue, I've tried a few other distros, some of them not KDE, and they come up with the same issue for me, I've actually noticed that they think my network card/port is different than what my manual calls it (82578DC vs 82578DM). Is there a way to manually corre...
