Nemo opens on top of desktop icons in 19.1

I noticed this annoying change in the position in which nemo opens in 19.1, vs. 19 and LMDE3. It now opens right over the left center of the desktop, obscuring a column of icons I have there, and requiring a drag to the right every time. In 19 and LMDE3 it opens more toward the center of the screen....

Re: LM 19.1 how to return icon sizes and spacing in Nemo

I find the icons within nemo too small at 50% and too large at 66%. What's more, the labels are tiny at 50%. The icon size and label size in 19 were just right.

'Turn off screen when inactive' works intermittently

Since I upgraded from Betsy to Cindy, I often find my screen on, well after the 10-minute setting. Other times it shuts down as expected. This is a desktop PC. I set my power options to turn off the screen after 10 minutes, and never suspend. I've tried closing any open programs, but this hasn't hel...

Re: Synaptic -- can't find documentation on this topic

Ah. I'm not seeing these in update manager because I have level 4 disabled. When I enable level 4 I see a metapackage for xorg, which presumably contains these packages I see in synaptic.

Synaptic -- can't find documentation on this topic [solved]

Can someone give me an explanation of this output, or direct me to a source? I've read a bunch of tutorials, duck-ducked the term 'installed(upgradable)', and read the man page, but haven't found answers to my questions below. I've been using synaptic for years for package installation and removal, ...

Re: Lost desktop functions with Cinnamon Update 3.4.6+betsy

I found a workaround for this issue on the web. in menu - preferences - startup applications, add a custom application called anything (e.g., 'nemo workaround'), with the command nemo-desktop and a 5-second delay. There already was an entry for Files, calling nemo -n, which wasn't working. No amount...

Re: mintupgrade thinks I'm using mate -- not!

Upgrade successful! Thanks everyone for the suggestions. The issues I had that aborted the upgrade were the following: - System retained the identification as mate, although I had switched back to cinnamon - Legacy nvidia drivers had to be thoroughly removed before beginning the upgrade - Plymouth-s...

Re: mintupgrade thinks I'm using mate -- not!

Thanks for that info. Clem suggested I use the following: sudo dpkg -r --force-depends mint-info-debian-mate and apt install mint-info-debian-cinnamon Which worked, but the installation ran into problems which appear to be related to my nvidia 340 driver. Apparently the newest driver is incompatible...

mintupgrade thinks I'm using mate -- not! [solved]

I've been using LMDE2 with cinnamon (LMDE1 before that) for years. A few months ago I switched to mate. I've switched back to cinnamon for the upgrade, and purged every mention of mate I could find in synaptic, and rebooted. But whenever I run mintupgrade check I get an error saying I'm running the ...

Re: Lost desktop functions with Cinnamon Update 3.4.6+betsy

I should mention that I've tried some of the fixes in similar posts a few years ago: nemo -n, nemo -q, and changing/changing back 'show desktop icons on primary monitor', with no effect. Then installed and switched to mate, which works normally.

Lost desktop functions with Cinnamon Update 3.4.6+betsy [workaround]

After updating my LMDE 2 (level 3 updates) my desktop is just a background picture -- no shortcut icons, no right-click menu. I can get to those shortcuts by opening nemo in the main menu and opening /home/myusername/desktop, and they're all there and functional. Any suggestions to fix this?

Re: What happened to smb-share in Mint 19

Perhaps try the tweak noted here: https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/ubuntu-beaver-samba-shares.html Worked for me -- I could connect, but read-only, until I applied this workaround. Just for one-stop shopping, the workaround was to edit the samba config file/etc/samba/smb.conf as root, and add th...

Re: What's Up with the Weather? (in Mate it stopped working for me in 18.)

I just updated from 17.3 in December, and the app's not working in Cinnamon. Curiously, I dual boot with LMDE, and it is working there.

Re: Cinnamon panel weather applet not working

Got it working. Looked in ~.local/share/cinnamon/applets and found two entries: one for the new mockturtle app, and one for an older cinnamon-weather app. Presumably this was a holdover from before my upgrade to Betsy. I deleted both, then reinstalled the new weather app from the settings menu, and ...

Re: Cinnamon panel weather applet not working

Thanks, mrdashhund. I just tried that -- there is no configure button for the weather applet. If I click on the calendar applet, for example, I see the configure button you're talking about. But when I click back to the weather applet it disappears.

Cinnamon panel weather applet not working [SOLVED]

This is the mockturtle weather applet that sits in the panel. All I get in LMDE2 (upgraded from LMDE a few months ago, manager indicates up-to-date) is an icon with a circular arrow and an ellipsis. If you click on it, it says 'loading'. You can right-click on it and take 'configure', but it just ta...

Synaptic says 1616 packages Installed (manual) [SOLVED]

I'm trying to clean up my system, which is several years old and has gone through several update packs. Currently, Upgrade Manager says I'm up to date with UP8. While working in synaptic, removing some never-used and obsolete packages, I noticed that I have 1616 packages listed under Installed (manu...
