Not sure how it would be done, but can't you temporariy set the USB disk as a "read only". It would still be visible but you would get your backup corrupted. Just have to reset it when you want to use it!!

Liked what I saw from running on CD, so now going to move onto the next scary thing and attempt to partition spare hard drive and install Mint.
