Re: What is your preferred backup program?

I use the bash copy command (cp -urp ... ). I have a script to copy data and 'home' hidden files to a partition on a second disk, or a USB if it's mounted. It's been working just fine for years.

Re: Backup Tool in 18.3

The root problem is that 'dpkg --get-selections' outputs package states install and deinstall, and the backup tool only likes install. The secondary problem is the output file has from one to six tabs between the package name and package state so they can not be effectively sorted. Step one is to re...

Re: Caja Drag and Drop

My technique it to press F3 to get a second window pane, in one pane navigate to the source, in the other navigate to the target, drag and drop from source to target and the result is displayed. In addition to immediately showing the result, this process creates a large target which is hard to miss....

Re: How to disable annoying 'close window' laptop function key?

Another option is to assign volume up/down to keys not near the close-window key. Example: super+up-arrow and super+down-arrow.

Re: [SOLVED] After upgrade to Mint 18.2 MATE...themes not working properly?

In Theme Configuration, gtk-theme-config, there are some options. 'Custom highlight colors' changes the window title bar. I don't know yet how well the other two work.

Re: LMDE 2 Mate 32: Very nice!

Install gnome-color-chooser and, from my notes, these are my settings: GNOME Color Chooser > Panel > Foreground > normal > white > Font > Sans 10 The panel background is dark and I change that in panel properties (right-click somewhere on the panel). These are my settings: Properties > Background > ...

Re: LMDE 2 Mate 32: Very nice!

3 - the less customizable Mate desktop (compared to Xfce; but Caja is better than Thunar) I'm interested in knowing what is less customizable as I find just the opposite. The only thing about LMDE that bothers me is application version numbers lagging behind Mint. I've noticed this with QupZilla an...

Re: Laptop battery drains while laptop is closed. Always dead upon reopening.

If your procedure is to shutdown by closing the laptop lid try using the shutdown button in the Action Buttons plug-in, which is usually parked at the right end of the panel in Xfce. If the battery holds power then something is draining power when the laptop is thought to be off.

I put a Workspace Switcher on the panel, which provides a limited overview. The mouse wheel cycles thru the workspaces for more detail.

You are correct. In some circumstances, which have to do with the Caja view, selecting a folder 'eats' the first click.

Re: MATE Start Menu - Annoying Behaviour When Searching

Another option is don't use the mouse at all after search results are displayed. As the search term is typed the list of results gets short. When there are 4 or fewer entries stop typing and use the down arrow to select an item, and press enter.

I suggest that the New Topic form include a Topic Category option. It would be a drop-down control with the 10 to 15 most common topic categories for the given forum, and Not Elsewhere Classified at the bottom. The category list in Desktop would include Cinnamon, Mate, KDE, XFCE, etc. The Networking...

The only time I've seen this problem is when the default .desktop file, created by the apps developers, specifies a show or do-not-show option that precludes the current desktop. Those options can be removed.

Re: how to stop mozilla snooping

When firefox config changes don't hold search for 'firefox.js', vendors create these to override firefox defaults, and user changes. Some advise users to make modifications in their file. These .js files can be deleted with impunity so changes can be made within firefox.

I must have missed the announcement, the last Cinnamon upgrade in LMDE supports side panels. This compels me to look for more new stuff and changes.
