MartyMint et al:
skip the compulsory backup with “sudo touch /etc/timeshift.json”. This creates a file that tells mintupdate that you've been there, done that.

Re: Locale-aware fonts installation / don't clutter the system with all the possible fonts
A possible last step on tzdata is to blacklist it in the update manager.

Re: Locale-aware fonts installation / don't clutter the system with all the possible fonts
Fonts are not the only annoyance. I have removed over 120 thousand files, 2GB of applications, fonts, themes, icons, locales, translations, and braile support, and I know there's other stuff I haven't found yet. I'm sure this is small bother to the hardware, but it's a bother for me and I'm glad to ...

With Mint I spend less time taking care of the operating system and more time taking care of business.

Re: What are your 'must have applications/software'?
Quod Libet is the only 'must have' because there is no adequate substitute. Second tier is GNUCash. Moving from apps to utilities there's Conky and YAD. Anything else I can find alternatives or do without.

Re: Unexpected Shutdowns
In my cursory review of this thread I didn't see xset mentioned, so I'll bring it up. xset is installed by default and the default settings are screensaver in 10 min and DPMS suspend in 10 min. This functions in addition to any other local screensaver settings. The two terminal commands to change th...

Years ago I got a wooden swivel chair, it's called an 'Americana Swivel Arm Bankers Chair', from schooloutfitters.com. With a proper cushion I sit in it most of the day.

Re: Alarm-Clock-Applet No Longer? - Mint 20
It's no longer maintained, unless someone steps forward. The only solution I came up with was to program my own timer-alarm in Python.Does anybody know where that (Alarm-Clock) app went?

Re: LM Ulyana 20 Cinnamon vs Mate
I've used both Mate and Cinnamon and never had a problem with either crashing. Mate puts function ahead of fashion, which means that it might not look best but it works best. I spend less time taking care of the desktop and more time taking care of business. In particular, the panel and panel widget...

Have files been moved to trash from a removable drive, such as a thumb drive? If so, remount the removable drive and empty the trash.

Most word processors allow formatting a single character as subscript.

Re: Choose the date format for the clock applet
One of the problems is that perfs do not show in the dconf editor without a search due to lack of a schema. Launch dconf editor Go to org/mate/panel/objects Wade thru the objects and determine the object number of the clock applet Search for 'prefs' In search results find and select the object for t...

Re: Suggestion: Add minimal install option
I agree with the suggestion. Applications are pre-installed because SOME people use them. Most of the pre-installed apps are useless to me so I have an apt command to install about 25 applications that I use. I know the extra apps don't bother the computer, but they sure slow me down when I wade thr...

Re: Trash bin will not empty!!
This can happen when files are deleted from a removable drive or partition, and then the drive or partition is un-mounted before the trash is emptied. If this is the case then re-mount the drive or partition and empty the trash.

Re: Fresh Installs: is there a way to avoid all of the Locales?
I use Bleachbit to remove localizations and regularly dump 100-200 megabytes. The other pet peeve of mine is useless translations that get in the way when I want to edit files. I created this script to dump them: #!/bin/bash # delete lines containing translations # # example: Comment[fr]=... for fil...

And, another option is install a clipboard manager.
I use Diodon and have it configured to save the last 50 things I've copied. Everything else can go away but Diodon is still there.

Re: What is your preferred backup program?
I use the bash copy command (cp -urp ... ). I have a script to copy data and 'home' hidden files to a partition on a second disk, or a USB if it's mounted. It's been working just fine for years.

Re: Backup Tool in 18.3
The root problem is that 'dpkg --get-selections' outputs package states install and deinstall, and the backup tool only likes install. The secondary problem is the output file has from one to six tabs between the package name and package state so they can not be effectively sorted. Step one is to re...
