Re: can receive but not send emails

I seem to have fixed things. The outgoing server is SMTP, smtp.madasafish.com. I'd been leaving out the first bit, SMTP.

Thanks to you both. I appreciate your willingness to help.

can receive but not send emails

Hi, I've installed Cinnamon 17.1 and have found that when I try to send emails, I can't. I get messages about not being able to connect to the server or I should put in a new password. So I downloaded Claus Mail to try that. I get the same messages so it must be something that I'm doing wrong, As I ...

screen keeps dimming

Hi, I've installed Mint Cinnamon 17.1 and am very pleased with it. Unfortunately, I have two problems I can't resolve. Every half hour or so the screen goes dim. A tap on the space bar brings it back but then I have to enter my password. This gets a bit irritating after a couple of hours. I know I s...

start page

Hi,

I've just installed Mint Cinnamon 17.1 and when I open Firefox browser I get the Mint Start Page. There isn't a Firefox task bar to give me the option of changing this by using 'preferences'.
Could someone please tell me how to get the F task bar showing on my screen?

Re: opening panel now missing

Okay, I opened a terminal and tried the commands listed in the replies: 'ALT+CTRL + backspace' resulted in a logging in panel which didn't do anything when I completed it. There seemed to be no way of changing to Mate, perhaps because I was using it. 'mate-panel --reset' gave me a warning that my di...

Re: opening panel now missing

Thanks for your reply. Trouble is, without the Opening Panel, I don't know how to bring up a terminal. Am I being dopey?

opening panel now missing

Hi,

I've been using Mate since July 2012. Last night, for no reason I can see, booting up showed me a screen without the usual panel which shows Favourites and All Apllications. I now can't use Linuxmint.

Can anyone help with this, please?

wisdom of updating?

Hi, I use Mint Maya 13 from July 12. Two days ago I thought i ought to update it and this gave me a world of problems. Lost my printer: lost my email connection: had problems booting. I've now re-installed from my original disc and all seems well. So, should I bother about updating? Should I downloa...

Re: update problems

This was a BIOS problem, I've now found. For some reason it had stopped registering my DVD drive as a bootable option. I've put that right and all is now well.

Thanks for your reply.

update problems

I updated Mate 13, 2012, last night and today my dvd drive doesn't recognise a live iso. The drive works okay when I pop in a photo cd, but when I restart with the Mate live dvd it isn't recognised at all and the computer just opens up as if there's nothing in the drive. Any help would be appreciated.

boot opening page correct but...

Hi, I have PcLinuxOS installed on partition sda1. It worked satisfactorily until I installed MInt Mate on partition sda3. Then, though Mint's partition editor said that I would get the choice of the two systems once the new installation was complete, all I can get is Mint. When I choose to boot PcLi...

Re: install over redundant os?

Somewhat by chance I found that PCLinuxOS has the solution itself. Under 'more applications' it has one called 'redo-mbr'. I tried it, and in the blink of an eye it pointed out that I had another OS installed and asked if I wanted it made bootable too. Did I not! I now have two of the most user frie...

Re: install over redundant os?

Well, it seems as if I've made a real cock-up of all this. I installed Boot-Repair, 2nd option as suggested, and ran sudo update-grub. All seemed to work - when I re-booted the pc up came Linuxmint 13 -sda1 Linuxmint recovery Linux on sda3 Linux nonfb on sda3 (and mem tests etc) Linux on sda3 is obv...

Re: install over redundant os?

Dataman, I tried what you suggested. I found the pulldown Grub panel which did list sda3, PclinuxOs. I selected this but, after install, I found only the 'safe mode' on the pc bootup screen. (Mint was there too, luckily, and I'm using it now) I tried booting PCOS Safe Mode but this didn't get very f...

install over redundant os?

Hi, I have two partitions on the HDD. Sda1 OS is out of date but sda3 OS is fine and I wish to keep it. When I reach the Grub page in the Mint install process, and select the Something Else option to overwrite sda 1, I can only choose / or /boot or /tmps, etc. I'm pretty sure that if I choose /, Min...

Re: unable to change monitor resolution SOLVED

Well, HughT. I've been a bit stupid here haven't I? Sorry about this.

Just for your information I re-booted a couple times and Maya Mate has now automatically changed the resolution to the spec I wanted.

Alls well that ends well.
many thanks, biffer

unable to change monitor resolution

to 1289 x 1024. At the moment the monitor is running on 1024 x 768, the max allowed in 'hardware, monitors' under the control panel. I read a fair amount of the posts on this subject and it seems to be something to do with Nvidia drivers. I have a Nvidia GT520 and a Philips 19" screen. So I download...

Re: unable to load debian xfce

I should of course posted all my computer details first thing. Trouble is it's a new computer and I'm not sure what I've got yet. And, in addition, when I tried both terminal commands you suggested neither of them worked. I got 'no such command' or similar. Now I don't really feel up to delving into...
