Re: Better than Mint?

I take back my initial views on Pinguy, after giving it a good run for its money I find it to be a excellent OS, and exceptionally pleasing on the eye.

Re: Mouse copy and paste function.

It nearly works on my Logitech, just that I need to r/c and select copy, the paste from middle mouse works great. My Microsoft Itelli mouse does niether, it just sits there like a dump shrew. :)

Re: Windows 7

After taking up Linux for a week I booted up my windows 7, and my first impression was how horrible windows 7 really is in comparison to Linux mint. I have now been a Linux user for about a month and in all of that time Mint has never crashed or locked up on me. Going back to windows 7 to handle a b...

Re: Mouse copy and paste function.

What's wrong with CTRL-C (Copy) CTRL-V (Paste). Or highlighting selection and right clicking and selecting copy if you are in terminal? You could say "what wrong with using windows xp instead". :) If it is a working function of Linux, then I would like to know why it does not work on my computer. I...

Re: Mouse copy and paste function.

I think I have spent enough time on this problem, time to mark this one as unsolved and move on, I have plenty more ground to cover before I can call myself a Linux user. :)

Thank you for trying to help Viking, but you can't win them all. Maybe I will buy another mouse sometime and try that.

Re: Mouse copy and paste function.

The two mice are on two separate Linux Mint machines. The Microsoft usb itellimouse is not broken, and the usb Logitech mouse does not copy by highlighting. The only thing I have found out so far is it is something to do with the kernel not recognizing certain hardware. (what ever that means) It wou...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

I overcame most of the larger problems while getting to grips with Linux. What did get to me was the tiny things that you took for granted with windows became a mountain to climb in Linux. What doesn't help the new comer is the lack of any standed routines in linux. You ask how you should do a certa...

Re: Mouse copy and paste function.

One is made by Microsoft the other by Logitech. The Logitech nearly works but not a peep out of the Microsoft mouse.
Is there no way to fix this, should I give up?

Mouse copy and paste function.

I have been reading in my books and guides, how in Linux you have a magic mouse, that copy's what is highlighted and pastes when the middle mouse button is pressed. One of my mice does not copy when text is highlighted and the other mouse won't do either. Do you need a special mouse for this functio...

Re: Small home network problem.

I solved it on my own, shows how good I am getting at this. :)

All I needed to do was change my host name.

Code: Select all

gksudo gedit /etc/hostname

[SOLVED] Small home network problem.

I have Linux mint installed on 2 computers. They are the same install and the public folders are set up with the same permissions.
My problem is that I can see the other computer and share files and printer but the other computer cannot see me.

Is it easily solved? Thank you.

Re: Gold stars in synaptic??

Thanks, but I don't know how this works.
I right click on one package with a gold star with lit button and there is no option to upgrade, but selections that have a "!" on the button can, even if that button is not lit.

I see lots of gold stars next to packages in synaptic package manager. What do they mean?

Thank you.

Re: Better than Mint?

I tried Pinguy but I didn't like it. Reminded me to much of Microsoft's offerings, a operating system full of bloat-ware and useless eye candy.
I will stick with my Mint because Mint is tops. :)

Really nice X-Com game.

You might have already heard about this game but just in case you haven't.

Just unzip to a folder and start the ufo.exe using wine. It runs perfectly and is a lot of fun. :)

Let me know what you think.

Do you not have the option to activate the Proprietary drivers?
I assume you are not trying to run it from your browser.

Re: Start up manager forgets.

Sorry, I think I have managed to fix it.
I was copying the command from the shortcut in my menu, that ended with '%U'. (opt/google/chrome/google-chrome %U)
I made my own command minus the '%U' and it seems to work.
I can only assume that %U tells the computer to only do this once.

Re: Start up manager forgets.

Just rebooted and chrome started fine, then I checked 'startup manager' and chrome has been removed. So it seems it is only working the one time. Does anyone know what is going on. Have I broken Mint already? :)

Start up manager forgets.

I have chrome launching on log in by adding it to my start-up manager. It was all working well until recently now it keeps on removing chrome from its list. Funny thing is if I just do a restart it is fine, Chrome boots on log in. But if I power down and then switch back on then chrome has been remo...
