Re: Poll: Desktop environments

KDE 4.8. It is stable and highly customizable. Everything just works. The KDE desktop environment doesn't get in the way of using the computer. Gnome 3 looked like it was designed to be anti-Win7. Everything seemed to be in a different place than you'd find in Win7 and the only rationale I could see...

Re: LM12 KDE problem?

I'm not sure how this would work out...it is sort of like the chicken and the egg. * LM12 KDE was released on January 27th. http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/stable/12/ * The Software Manager appears not to work for many people after installation, so getting updates could be a problem. * No cha...

Re: LM12 KDE problem?

I suspect it is a matter of familiarity. openSUSE guides you along extremely well to ensure you don't install something without all the dependencies. You can go ahead and install it, but you are warned ahead of time. Perhaps if I had something like that when I tried to uninstall two programs from LM...

Re: Mint Desktop Environment Popularity Poll

I almost checked KDE, but voted for "Other"...which in this case, is still KDE. I used LM10 KDE till last November. I liked it a lot, but was trying to find a way to get Skype to work well with the video camera and sound card. I decided to try LM 12 to see if that was better with the video camera an...

Re: MInt Debian: e-Sword in wine.

In order to make that work, I set up a separate config file within Wine and told it to emulate the Windows 8 OS. It works like a champ, but wouldn't on earlier versions of Windows OS emulations once it updated to a later version of Wine. Have you tried making a specific configuration in wine for eS...

Re: LM12 KDE problem?

I've been running openSUSE 12.1 KDE since December when I got tired of waiting for something to happen here. I did a 4.8 upgrade after it came out. I haven't had any clitches at all. Like I've written here before, it is boring. Nothing fails. It just works like it should. We KDE users here were told...

Re: MInt Debian: e-Sword in wine.

I use The Word now...used to use eSword. In order to make that work, I set up a separate config file within Wine and told it to emulate the Windows 8 OS. It works like a champ, but wouldn't on earlier versions of Windows OS emulations once it updated to a later version of Wine. FWIW, I've use eSword...

Re: kde distro headaches....

I do much the same thing as you do Hawkeye_52. I'm sure there's a better way, but I save anything I care about to a "shared" NTFS partition. If all else fails, I can access it through the WinXP dual boot option. I have a root, home and swap partition. When I went from Linux Mint 10 KDE to LM12 and a...

Re: kde distro headaches....

When you reinstall from one distro to another, do you reformat the partitions, or do you reinstall over the existing partitions?

Re: Why so confusing?

When I was searching around a few months ago, I stumbled upon a Wikipedia article that gave some background on the various distributions. They gave some good info on things like which ones were for experienced users, which were trying out the cutting edge code, etc. Here are two pages that might hel...

Re: kde distro headaches....

"opensuse 12.1 kde was nice, but, too much to maintain updates, etc." Not sure what you're getting at here. openSUSE 12.1 KDE has been working great for a couple months now. Updates happen automatically each day, or when available. The updating app won't let any programs update unless all the dependenc...

I've been running KDE 4.8 on openSUSE 12.1 for awhile. I didn't know there was any incompatible widgets. Which are you having problems with?

Re: Stable alternative to Gnome 3?

I suggest KDE. The original KDE 4.0 was buggy and not easy to use. Over time it has matured a lot. You'll find more ways to customize your desktop than you'll find in Gnome. In some reviews, it beats Windows 7 in usability.

Re: Cannot get KDE to update from 4.7.3 to 4.7.4 or 4.7.95

KDE 4.7.9 RC2 has been out for awhile. I've been using it for a week or so with no issues at all. KDE 4.8 is now on the server, though I've heard the official announcement isn't scheduled till 25 January. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-VPgXb3_zX2k/Txsta-TrH2I/AAAAAAAABow/7Vh4SzGPbFI/s720/KDE48.j...

KDE 4.8 is Out

KDE 4.8...not the release code but final version, is on the servers.

I've been using the RC2 for a week now, and it seems stable for what I do with it.

While it isn't one of the two choices you wrote in your first post, IceWM is by far the quickest desktop to load that I've ever seen. It literally loaded in seconds.

Re: Mint 12 KDE

Well, I've tried the RC Mint KDE, and it's really just Kubuntu with a mint menu logo. Good thing they teamed up with the netrunner people as netrunner completely smokes both Kubuntu and Mint Lisa KDE. Font rendering and everything else looks better in netrunner 4 than Kubuntu and Mint Lisa KDE. Thi...
