Mint 20 upgrade breaks keyboard/mouse

OK, so I thought this was just a quirk on my desktop machine. But now it's happened on yet ANOTHER machine, exact same problem. I upgraded two machines from Mint 19.3 to 20.0. Both are running Cinnamon desktop, LightDM logins. On both machines, even when having to go through the whole process of man...

Can't upgrade to Mint20 without downgrading everything

I seem to recall in earlier versions of Mint, it didn't care if I had brought in newer versions of packages than were on the Ubuntu/Mint sites, as it would simply upgrade to the newest version in the main repos if appropriate. It also used to be able to temporarily disable repos it didn't want to wo...

Re: Monthly News – April 2020

Work continues on Linux Mint 20 “Ulyana” which is planned for June this year
I am presuming Mint 20.1 or 20.2 is going to be called "Utena", right?

Re: notifications log or way to see past notifications?

Definitely need a notifications history/log. I get notices forwarded from KDE Connect and they disappear before I can even get a chance to look at them. I'm talking 3-4 seconds, and they're gone. Not much use to have notifications if you aren't sitting right on top of the keyboard/mouse in order to...

.deb cache directory moved?

Up until just recently, when I was updating my systems at home, I would rsync the .deb files from that update over to another machine so I could save on bandwidth (both on my end *and* the repositories). But now it seems either the /var/cache/apt/archives directory has been moved, or the system is d...

Re: Can't burn a cd

People still burn CD's? Audio CD's? (!) Color me surprised. I don't think I've burnt (or listened to) an audio CD in over 15 years. Yes, Audio CDs for those vehicles or other setups that can't play MP3s. Since most of the Japanese bands I'd want to buy albums of don't have American distribution dea...

Re: [Solved]Installer in virtualbox

I don't see how that does anything. Switching to "scaled mode" doesn't make the installer window any smaller.

And the suggestion to use <ALT> to move the window doesn't work, because it just moves the entire VBox window on the host.

Re: When did you come to Linux?

My first Linux install was 1n 996 or 1997, Slackware on a Micron Pentium 133 laptop. By 2001 I was primarily using Linux at home and at work (that and AIX). Even working at a Linux company now (a contractor, not a regular employee, so it's not like I'm being infaithful with another distro on my own ...

Re: MS Going to Linux?

The suggestion I often make is MS could (or should) move their legacy code into a Wine-like runtime (they could actually use Wine itself if they didn't mind sublitting their code changes to Wine's GPL license, which I don't see them doing). Had they done it way back at the Wine/reWind split they cou...

A lot of j-pop (mainly "anisong") and even more Vocaloid. In particular I've been enjoying various stuff from Il Cremonese (http://il-cremonese.net/)

Re: Linux programs come to Chromebooks

What I would rather see in ChromeOS is a way to run X-window applications remotely (have them installed on the desktop machine in my home office, use the Chromebook in another room to run them on that screen). Essentially, use the Chromebook as a "portable Xterminal".

Time to fork Gnome-Terminal

I think it's time to make a Cinnamon fork of Gnome-Terminal. The Gnome devs, in their infinite arrogance, removed the ability to manually set titles on tabs. I've been working with RHEL at work, which still has a version that hasn't been kneecapped, so it wasn't until this week I had need for titles...

Minimal Mate install

I like the solution Ubuntu has provided in 10.04 of having a "minimal" install. I would like to do this on one of my systems, but with Mate rather than Gnome. I've experimented by installing an UbuntuServer base install and then bringing in the Mint repo and installing the Mate-Desktop-Cor...

Re: Cannot elevate to root in GUI/desktop

I just checked here on my Ubuntu 16.04.4. The application menu item "GParted" launches the command gparted-pkexec . I.e. the user id switch to root is not done by gksudo, but by pkexec. What you could try in order to find out whether it is this pkexec which causes the problem to you is th...

Re: Cannot elevate to root in GUI/desktop

I can't say that I understand what is causing that problem. It could be a problem with pkexec instead of sudo. Just to check your profile, post the result of the command: find $HOME -not -user $USER -exec ls -lad {} \; (I didn't set the original post to notify me of replies, so only just seeing thi...

Gnome-terminal keeps disabling menubar

I am finding that Gnome-Terminal keeps disabling the menubar every few days or so. Not sure if it's something in package updates where it refuses to respect the user preferences (being from the Gnome devs, I wouldn't be surprised if they were forcing *their* preference). But I want it left ON, so ho...

Cannot elevate to root in GUI/desktop

Whenever I run any applications that would prompt me for my password for sudo (USB Image Writer, gparted, etc), all I get is some flickering dialogue box that *should* be prompting me for a password, but instead it seems it's immediately failing on the password prompt without ever taking a password,...

Re: Switching back to MDM

I've done a clean install of 18.3, and I had to switch it back. First, there's no configuration option in the lightdm-settings GUI for timed logins (and it's been around how many years?). So I found the way of tweaking the settings in lightdm.conf But then the response of the startup is SO bad that ...

Re: Purging DNS cache

dnsmasq is enabled, with "--cache-size=0". Still doesn't solve the problem. If someone has visited the page, the system will not switch to a local redirect in /etc/hosts without having to log out and back in. Looking for a method of forcing the system to change immediately.
