Re: NEWB w/dual boot questions (windows folders - pics, music, etc)

I would put Linux on your "main drive", using the "install along side" option.
That is of course dependant on the remaining free space on that drive. How much is there ?
Yes you should be able to access those files on your "slave" drive...unless it is formatted weird.

Re: Distrowatch stats for LM?

I'm not sure how anyone really has much belief in those distrowatch stats. Mint was on top for a very long but even as much as I'm a fan of Mint, I seriously doubt anything even comes close to Ubuntu as a desktop linux distro. I agree completely. This topic came up some time ago, and I did a compar...

Re: Should I update everything on the Update Manager list?

The general rule of thumb is, yes, apply all updates. That said, there can be exceptions to every rule, and "sometimes" it might be best NOT to update a certain package. One example I have is kodi, I found out an update breaks it, so I blacklisted Kodi. I also blacklisted another package for reasons...

Re: Linux Mint crashing from USB flashdrive

It would help people to know which windows, and maybe some specifics of your machine. My guess is it probably has something to do with windows fast boot, or maybe secure boot. You can search for threads about how to turn those off. here's one https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=264652 I've ...

Re: Mouse way too fast!

I have found the mouse speed to be pretty fast on fresh installs. ON mint 19 for sure, I don't recall what it was like on Mint 18, anyway, Opening up the mouse preferences shows the speed to be set to the slowest level, however just moving the slider up a bit, and maybe back again has always fixed i...

Re: How to Install Windows 10 in dual boot on Linux?

Curious as to what win10 can do in a Vbox that win 7 could not ? (using a LOT less room) Well, I didn't give it much thought as I'm no expert. I was able to download windows 10 on Microsoft but I haven't found anything about windows 7. I would be happy to install 7 but since I was unable to solve t...

Re: Is there a Lightweight alternative to VLC?

Hi "mattig89ch", FYI: With any computer operating system, anytime you install or remove anything always read the screen carefully to make sure it will not remove or "break" other software or important system packages. Again, you can always say no or cancel, and ask here or read about it on the Inte...

Re: Battery Recharge

When I hover over the battery icon in the panel it shows "% of charge". Does yours always show the same 37% ? Plugged in, unplugged, always the same, that would be strange. Capacity is something different than % of charge. A battery can be fully charged but still only be 37% of the capacity it had w...

Re: Adding Windows XP style Quick Launch "folder"?

The OP mentioned they were using Cinnamon in their first post and is posting in the Cinnamon sub-forum. There isn't a (decent) drawer applet in Cinnamon. I guess you are using MATE? OOps. Yes MATE mostly, cinnamon in Vbox. I did read the post, but apparently quickly forgot the cinnamon bit. I got t...

Hi. 1) Then to my problem: I'd like to know is it somehow possible to make Windows XP styled Quick Launch "Folder" for storing your "pinned" icons at bottom panel as it gets messy and full fast. 2) P.S. Not the dumbest question by far. But I'm sure you left out some stuff people will want to know. 1) what Desktop are you using on Mint ? 2) what sharing protocol ? I have no win10, but \\ip_address\folder_name, looks like SAMBA, you should mention that, maybe edit the title too. Something like "Shari...

Re: Lenovo Ideapad's “charging thresholds manager”? On AC power all the time: okay?

And then I read about “charging thresholds” (some from Lenovo’s forums) in which some 40/60% Start/Stop charging magic is nice for the battery’s life. I’m not sure whether plugging this brand new laptop every time I use it—at 100% battery—is okay. I see there are opposing opinions about this. I hav...
