Re: Installation question

#7, the option to install is missing because it is already installed, at least I gather that from what you said in #4 #8, " how do I clone the SSD to a second partition? Is this possible," I think that is going to depend on if you made any partitions on the SSD. Did you ? The cloning software I've s...

Re: Optimal Power Management Settings

"Eg to maximize battery life" One very important thing keep your laptop clean, at least once a year (twice better) get the dust out. A warm laptop that the fan is always on is a big power user / waster. Set brightness level to minimum comfortable level, (I'm at 69% plenty bight for indoors). Turn of...

The standard text editor of mate is xed you can find that in the menu as Text Editor, under accessories. PS and it "should" be showing up when you search for it in the menu ?

Re: cannot download from youtube

Youtube is constantly changing to prevent people from downloading their content. The downloader programs have to also constantly change to keep up. Therefore they will not ALWAYS work. I gave up on them, and use a solution that always works. Basically record your screen with your favorite screen rec...

Re: Is It Ok To Move Boot Drive From One Computer To Another? (without reinstalling?)

I can't tell you where but The thing I noticed is that when I go into the terminal it lists the OTHER computer name that it was previously in (mark@mark-HP-Compaq-Elite-8300-SFF) instead of the current computer it is in now (dell-vostro-460) this is just a name set in software when you first instal...

Re: Can't Install as Dual Boot Alongside Windows 10 UEFI

I just seen a similar thread where the poster could not "install along side win 10". In that case the reason was win 10 had HOGGED all 4 primary partitions, the solution was to delete the recovery partition. I do not know, but suspect that is why your installer is not showing your first drive (win 1...

Re: Tricky situation - Disk full

if your logging into console (CTRL + ALT + F1) from a live session. ?
USER = mint
PASSWORD = no password, just press ENTER

EDIT; MrEen already got that.

It is hard to know what you want, login, delete stuff, or reinstall. If you want to reinstall, what's stopping you from doing that?

Someone else in the house uploading pictures / videos ?
You can check your internet speed to see if it is normal at speedtest.net

I occasionally run into slow pages, where you see all that stuff down in the left corner.

Re: 2 fine tuning questions

Howard, to "eliminate the need for the sign-in"
go to control center > screen saver and remove the check mark in front of "lock screen saver is active"
Additionally you "may" need to go to control center > power manager and choose "do nothing" when laptop is closed

Re: Slow Boot Time on Mint 19

Interesting, as I see a lot of threads about slow boot mint 19, seeing it called "cinnamon syndrome", assume it was cinnamon as well ? So I made a persistent stick with mint 19 cinnamon, sure enough it took 2min 45 secs to boot, not only that, could not launch a terminal either by clicking on the ic...

Re: Having two Linux Mint OS - how to remove one

Assuming disk space is not a factor, (usually isn't, I got 5 OSes one one disk) why not keep both at least for awhile, the mint 19 not showing up may be as simple to fix as running sudo update-grub from the mint 18. and reboot. (I said may be). You didn't happen to encrypt did you? You can of course...

If -a or --pending is given instead of package, all unpacked but unconfigured packages are configured. second one,...

Re: order of tabs in the taskbar

#1) I have wanted to give chromium a chance, but it's either too complicated at this point for me to use, or requires lots of resources to function, or both. I'm not sure if I've read correctly, but if I did, it needs 100 GB space to be installed on my HDD, and at least 4-6 GB of RAM memory. all fo...

^^ Thanks,
Yes it takes time. I see you joined 5 years ago, so didn't realize you've only been using for a few days.
BROWSERS, besides firefox, chromium is a good choice, and one should always have a second browser, in case something happens to one.

Re: order of tabs in the taskbar

Another approach to reducing panel icon clutter is to use more than one workspace. I'm surprised how many newer Linux users don't use that feature. Oh yes. And it's such a good one. OP, if you've never tried this, you may be in for a treat. Agreed multiple workspaces a treat, not to mention cool. E...

Re: order of tabs in the taskbar

I know what you mean, I'm slightly OCD myself. When I was running my business, and getting lots of email I always liked thunderbird to be in the left most position. I'm not sure but I don't think there is a way to assign a taskbar position to program, add the fact that they dynamically resize when a...

@trytip, THANKS, I will take your word for it, that it is OK to do so.
"nothing wrong with experimenting," But for "cautious" me, I would rather still do that kind of thing not on my daily driver. I have a few VBox machines for that. Even though I have redundant backup (cloned) drives.

Re: can I switch DE?

Depends on what command you ran? I didn't give you a command, just a package name. You can install that via your usual graphical tools like Software Manager or Synaptic package manager, but if you prefer the command line, then this will do it: apt install mint-meta-mate @gm10, I know you are smart,...
