Re: Disk failure due to heat

I don't know what might be wrong with your disk, but the TEMP shown of 82 F is not hot.
What does the SMART DATA say about the disk ?

Re: Running LM From a Flash Drive

I agree with the others getting a used laptop, or installing Virtual Box are perhaps the better way to go, BUT David asked how to put Linux Mint on a USB, so.. BTW Yes I also agree it runs slower from a stick, but it is not that bad, at least for "practice" trying it out. To put Linux Mint on a stic...

It is not really recommended to remove anything that came as part of original install. If you want WPS just add it.

Re: Proper sequence for full backup and clone

EDIT see your going from desktop to laptop, different hardware. Because a clone or a Timeshift snapshot is meant to restore the same machine, or at least very similar hardware it may not work to "restore" to a different machine. I do run from cloned drives, but they are in identical machines.

Re: Google Earth

For many people, for whatever reason the newest version of GE just does not work properly. I am one of them, however an older version 7.1.8* works just fine. Check out this other thread https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=251204&p=1433162#p1433162 And link to the download of the versio...

Re: Change the Default location for Screenshot to save to

Screenshot "Save As" defaults to Pictures, and that aggravates me no end...... that folder is so full, I can't find the screenshot..... I try to remember to change it to Desktop, but I am constantly missing that.... This needs to be changed to "Desktop" I am constantly taking screenshots all day lo...

Re: Keyboard cannot find key to write AT sign

Don't know anything about your keyboard, but you can use the "U" code to get the @ symbol.
Press and hold ctrl + shift + U, release the keys, then press 40 then enter.

Re: Need the "degree symbol"

I too am one who misses the alt codes from windows, in particular for me was ¼, ½, ¢, among a few others. If you only need the one for degree then remembering the U code for degree is not so bad, but the U code, "ctrl shift U...B0 space", is not that convenient eh? Since you still looking for other ...

Re: Laptop suspend problems

to resolve those issues, I had to turn everything off in Power Management. during the day, I close the lid if not in use, at night, I power down and shut it off. I for one totally agree with this strategy. Sleep, suspend, hibernate, all have no shortage of problems, not just on Linux eitther. There...

Re: Is it a good idea to enable S.M.A.R.T. on external HDDs?

AZgl1500 and rickNS, How are they attached :?: Maybe it's the dock that I'm using :? Standard backup type HDD, attached to always powered USB 2.0 port. I could double check, but pretty sure I have had an old HDD attached to combo USB/ESATA port, and SMART info was available on that as well.

Will Linux Mint automatically scan the external HDD when it is mounted,
Yes Mint takes care of it for you. No intervention required. SMART data can be found in the "disks". The information may not be there immediately the first time you plug in a drive for the first time.

Re: Is there a way to save/back up an specific Kernel Version ?

Take a Timeshift snapshot of your good working system. then on your "future clean installation" restore that good working system. I have not done a restore personally (no need) but do hear it is reliable, and fairly quick. I think the advantage of this simple method is you get ALL your changes, and ...

Re: Ebay hacked ? I think so

Its unlikely that E.bay has been hacked ( but not impossible ). A more likely scenario here is that you've picked up a a browser re-direct nasty, this is a 'classic'. Thanks Matty for reply, I agree it is "unlikely", but there does seem to be evidence of it happening before, and they did not admit ...

Ebay hacked ? I think so

Although you won't see any admission of that by Ebay, I do think (am quite positive) they do have a problem. Few days ago I was on Ebay, and all of a sudden music started playing, strange I thought as in 15-20 years I NEVER seen this happen. Then today I was on Ebay, and I was re-directed to another...

Re: Newbie contemplating installing linux over w7 or xp, part 2

Really? I was thinking linux would work smoother than windows. So before I install I'm guessing it would be best to run it off the flashdrive first to see how it does? And would that be a good test to go by? Thank you "Really?" on a 15 YO +/- system, you expect something new to work better than wha...
