Re: Get PCLinuxOS 2010 To Boot With GRUB2 Controlling GRUB

One clarification please, this is necessary because pclinuxos has GRUB Legacy and this disro installed afterwards ( Mint was already installed). If both distros have the same version (GRUB2) or the distro that is to be installed afterwards has the newer version of GRUB, then still the similar method...

Re: Upgrading from LinuxMint 10 to LMDE, is it possible?

I dont think you can call it 'upgrade' or 'update'. I dont think LMDE is a higher version but just a different system. Like you, I wanted to try LMDE after Mint 10 gnome but came back to mint10 immediately. Mint 10 gnome works beautifully and conveniently for a newbie like me. I never liked linux th...

Resizing and Grub

If I increase the size of sda7 (root) by 7 GB and reduce the size of sda6 by 7 GB, then it is a simple operation to be performed from the live dvd.
I hope GRUB or UUID or any other configuration will not get affected. Right? Grub is on sda.
Or some additional steps are required?

Re: How to delete Swap partition?

That may be only partly correct as I very much doubt that you can dual boot Xp as logical and an earlier windows as primary. example - I doubt it is possible to dual boot win 98 as primary and xp as logical. So xp and older windows system will not dual boot on logical but both must be on primary onl...

Re: How to delete Swap partition?

Hi seeley, You can have Vista and 7 in logical partitions and still bootina normal way, only if you have XP in primary partition. I have XP as primary and as a matter of choice I installed Vista in logical partitions. In another system I have 7 in logical one because I have XP as primary. Vista and ...

Re: How to delete Swap partition?

Thankyou seeley and dawgdoc, These are valuable inputs and important topics to explore & learn especially Grub recovery. Correcting MBR of a windows system is the easiest task if you ask me. Only 3 steps are required if you have a recovery disk made from a good software. 1: Make the recovery dis...

Re: How to delete Swap partition?

Thanks for your observations. The disorder I believe happened as I played with different partitioning softwares (windows softwares as well as Gparted at the same time). I used different ways to install different Linux systems and messed up several times. I lost boot sectors a few times and even some...

Re: How to delete Swap partition?

I hope this is what you asked for.
I think I better leave the Swap as it is now as per the rule you mentioned.
But, I will welcome your inputs.

Re: How to delete Swap partition?

Hi Seeley, I am not in any rush to delete the swap. I am having second thoughts now on the worthiness of recovering 2GB for the Mint partition( as grimdestripador said in his reply) . In your opinion, IS 1.2 GB RAM sufficient for good functioning of mint 10 without any swap partition? Please suggest...

How to delete Swap partition? [SOLVED]

I want to delete the 2 GB swap partition and increase the size of mint partition by 2 GB. The system never uses swap partition as I check that regularly. RAM is 1.2 GB. As I am writing this, the system is using 350 MB. I am afraid that if I do any such change, the boot sector will develop problems. ...

Re: Is there an "Idiots Guide to Downloading Mint"?

If you don't have a burning software already or you find the recommended open source burning software not easy to use, then google for "Burn Aware" and download the free version of the software which is very easy to use. Just remember to "BURN IMAGE" to "DVD" and select...

Re: Is there an "Idiots Guide to Downloading Mint"?

There is no complicated step involved in burning the image to dvd. No advanced knowledge is required. You must be using some burning software already. So you are familiar with it. What software do you use? Just find and use the option - write/ burn image and browse to the file you downloaded. The fo...

Where can I find information for a newbie on groups?
While I understand Root, I dont have any idea about other groups.
Why admin has to be there if we have root? And Adm sounds like Admin.

Securing NTFS partition in Mint [SOLVED]

Re: Questions about Defragging or Antivirus? Look here first

I read the first two pages but I still have some confusion regarding viruses. That was a very broad discussion on need of antivirus in linux. But I am looking for very specific and narrowed down answers to the following point. I am using Mint 10 Julia dvd edition 32 bit and have updates installed. I...
