CrunchBang + LXDE = stable LMDE

Those of you who've been wishing for a version of LMDE based on Debian Stable instead of Debian Testing can effectively have it in CrunchBang Linux. CrunchBang is by far the most popular distro based on Debian Stable. I'm in the process of switching from Debian Testing derivatives to Debian Stable d...

Re: Microsoft is Doomed

Microsoft today reminds me of General Motors in the Malaise Era. Windows Vista was Microsoft's Chevrolet Vega. Windows 8 is Microsoft's Chevrolet Citation, Cadillac Cimarron, or Oldsmobile diesel engine. Windows XP and 7 (Microsoft's more successful products) are analogous to the Oldsmobile Cutlasse...

Re: What prompted your move to linux?

I began using Linux in early 2007. Bad reviews of Vista made me determined to NEVER buy Windows again. Not only was it notoriously buggy, it was so bloated that only a brand new TOP-OF-THE-LINE computer could handle it.

Re: OT: PentiumMMX, 100mb RAM - recommended dist?

A budget of $50 should be enough to acquire a desktop computer that is 4 to 5 years old. Such a computer should be fast enough for Ubuntu (if you don't mind Unity) or derivatives like Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Linux Mint Main Edition, etc. Linux Mint Debian Edition (which bypasses the heavy Ubuntu overhead)...

Re: OT: PentiumMMX, 100mb RAM - recommended dist?

Wow, this computer is ancient! Given the Pentium MMX, 100 MB of memory, and a 3 GB hard drive, I'm guessing that this computer originally came with Windows 95 or 98. antiX Linux and Puppy Linux are great lightweight distros, but even this computer may have difficulty with them. As mentioned by a pre...

Re: Cinnarch - Arch based distro with Cinnamon default sessi

I haven't tried Cinnarch (or any Arch-based distro, for that maatter), but it's another indicator that Cinnamon is a big hit. Congratulations to the Linux Mint team! I can't think of any other distro that has accomplished so much with so few people.

Android app: Find Your First Linux Distro

Check out my new Android app called Find Your First Linux distro. That old PC still has value. This app helps you select your first Linux distro based on the specs of your PC. You'll be pleased to see that Linux Mint Main Edition and Linux Mint Debian Edition are two of the three distros I recommend...

Why would removing a package force the install of others?

For developing my LMDE-based distro Swift Linux, I'm trying to remove the zenity packages and the libdecoration0 package. In the post-installation setup, the "apt-get purge" command works as I'd expect. But in the chroot environment in my modified version of the mintConstructor remastering script (t...

LightDM in LMDE 201204

Has anyone been able to get LightDM to work properly in the latest release of Linux Mint Debian Edition (201204)? I can replace the default MDM with LightDM with just apt-get commands. The problem comes when trying to boot up with LightDM. During the process of loading up LightDM, the screen blacks ...

Updating LMDE from the command line

I understand that the normal way of updating LMDE (last September's version) is to make the changes to the sources.list file specified in the latest update pack and then to run the provided update manager. What's the proper way to do the same thing in command line? I know that making the same specif...

Re: Problem installing LMDE derivative

I have resolved this issue by updating all of the live-installer package's dependencies. Apparently, a conflict between new packages and the old pre-installed ones led to this error. (A Google search of this error message pointed to this as a possible culprit.) I've implemented the necessary changes...

Problem installing LMDE derivative

I'm the founder and lead developer of a Linux distro called Swift Linux. While Swift Linux has been based on antiX Linux in the past, I'm in the process of basing it on LMDE. (It will use IceWM and ROX pinboard as a replacement for GNOME.) The installation process fails now, but that wasn't the case...

Re: Cinnamon, Gnome 3, XFCE, KDE, and the Death of Ubuntu

I'm maybe missing the point, but isn't it a big mistake to talk about the "life" and/or "death" of a distro based (mostly) on its DE? If that's the case, then most of the major distributions should have disappeared at some point, because each of them has gone through a phase of "desktop ugliness". ...

I am the founder and lead developer of another distro called Swift Linux. I'm currently in the process of replacing the antiX Linux base with an LMDE base. The idea is to combine the superior inner workings (like driver support) of Linux Mint with the superior speed of Puppy Linux and antiX Linux, t...

Re: The End of Mint Fluxbox?

I think there will be Fluxbox editions of both the Ubuntu-based and Debian-based editions. However, I don't think that will happen anytime soon, because the Linux Mint team has its hands full dealing with GNOME 3. Because GNOME is what most users and developers are used to, that has to take priority...

Could one of you please send me the list of packages installed in this light version of LMDE? The command to use when you boot up the live ISO is "dpkg-query -W -f='${Package}\n' > list.txt" . I would REALLY appreciate this, because Transmission isn't showing an available copy from connected peers a...

Re: Pear OS Ubuntu variant

This is a case of life imitating art. Nickelodeon sitcoms like _Zoey 101_, _Drake and Josh_, _iCarly_, and _Victorious_ feature Pear computers. I wonder if the people behind Pear OS have watched these shows.
