Re: The number ONE fault with Linux (my opinion)

Hi, you guys make some good points but consider the hardware I'm having the issue with? It does not get much more basic. I work as an OEM system builder and spend my days building Windows based PC's as well as repairing destroyed Windows installs. I have used Linux as my full time desktop for four y...

The number ONE fault with Linux (my opinion)

OK, I love Linux so don't get me wrong. The biggest issue with Linux is graphics support on boot. Most modern Linux distros boot from a live CD / DVD. It's pot luck if it's going to boot. This is not a Linux Mint issue this is an all Linux distro issue. Case in point that led to this post is I'm try...

Re: What's great about Mint Gnome, and Mint KDE4

OK, explanation and "eating humble pie" time. I installed Mint KDE4 and while going so was drinking Guinness (to much) I posted a rude, ungrateful thread when I could not find how to set up my printer. When I looked next morning I was horrified. I tried to remove it but couldn't so I remov...

What's great about Mint Gnome, and Mint KDE4

OK, I'll admit it, I like KDE. Gnome to me was so "Windows 2000". Mint with Gnome changed that, it was "Ubuntu as it was mean't to be". Mint changed many things, lumping together all the settings (appearance / hardware) and the great "Mint Menu". This is what Mandriva d...

Problem getting Emerald going.

Hi all, in the past I've just installed Emerald and changed the windows decorator in Compiz> Window Decorator to emerald. This does not work in Mint 8. Searching the board I came across: emerald --replace This works for your session but is gone at next boot. Has anyone any ideas on getting Emerald w...

Will our women ever appreciate Linux?

My wife (and I do love here) used to drive me mad. Windows XP, viruses, spyware, running slow, crashing etc.

She has now used Mint for two years. No more viruses, spyware, running slow or crashing.

Does she appreciate that? No way. What do you have to do to please them *LOL*

Ditching Firefox.

OK, I've used Firefox "forever", even back when i used Windows. Now; the way I personalise FF brings out a little bug which was around in V2.x, solved in 3.x but back in 3.5. With this being said I have changed to Epiphany, what a breath of fresh air. Easy to configure, flexible to configu...

I always wondered who would buy Nero when there are so many good Linux apps.

Must be for newbies coming from Window$ maybe?

A problem cloning my Linux Mint 8 install

Hi all, everytime I set up a new machine I clone the drive with Acronis (a nice commercial Linux program) After setting up Mint 8 and trying to Clone Acronis tells me there are errors in the file system. Although I can do a "byte for byte" copy I'd prfer to find the errors and correct them...

Re: Getting the green out!

Hi there, go to the control centre and under "look and feel" click "appearance". There you can change colours, themes, borders etc. If you want a couple of suggestions for icon themes download (through Synaptic) Oxygen and Gion. For a nice mouse cursor download "Comixcursors...

Re: Thunderbird problem upgrading from Mint 7 to Mint 8

I got it. The first time I tried I first deleted the file and then pasted the new one in. This time I let the new file over write the old on and it works.

[SOLVED] Thunderbird problem upgrading from Mint 7 to Mint 8

Hi all, for years when changing distros I've just copied the hidden file <.Mozilla thunderbird> and dropped it into the home directory of the new install. I've done a clean install of Mint 8 and when bringing the Thunderbird file over nothing I do seems to get it to work. Opening Thunderbird greets ...

A possible fix for Poulsbo. Help needed.

Hi all, take a look at this website and follow the link to the repo.

http://gadgetmix.com/index/official-lin ... o-chipset/

Could someone help this novice add this repo after installing Mint 8 on my BenQ eco 121 so I can rid it of windows?

Cheers

Re: Slap on the wrist in the PCLinuxOS forums

Now I will say this, I always found PCL a good solid distro. I disagreed with them not being a part of the development of KDE4 (they are still a KDE 3 distro. I thought it unfair that they did not allow their community to help debuging, suggesting fixes, features etc and plan to release PCL with KDE...

From here in the US, "Eldy" sounds like a patronizing or even insulting term to call an older person. Is it acceptable in the UK and EU?
Would be a bit insulting in Australia to.

Distro hopper finally happy.

Hi all, I started using Linux with Mandriva 9.2. (still have the disks) Over the years I've had a hot and cold love affair with Linux until I started to take it seriously with the release of Vista . PCLinuxOS in August 2007 was the Linux of choice. Over the past few years I've used many distros, mai...

This is the problem, these repo's do not exist. I hate to say it but I get an uneasy feeling this is a Windows only netbook.

Slap on the wrist in the PCLinuxOS forums

Now this really surprised me. I've long hovered between Mint and PCL. I posted a review of Mint 7 in the chat area (a very good review) and to my surprise not only had the post removed but got a really curt email from Texstar (Mr PCLinuxOS) Words to the effect of: "We don't discuss other distro...

GMA-500 (Poulsbo) and Mint 8

Again this nasty rears it's ugly head. I've read several threads about getting this Intel video chip going but they all fail due to the Ubuntu sources being missing (or removed) Does anyone know how to get this going in Mint 7 or Mint 8? A good tutorial is needed for this as there are so many mini n...
