Is it good to upgrade the kernel?

I notice that Mint Updater is only set to update level 1 and 2. The other options are less stable. If I use Mint and never update the kernel or anything beyond level 1 and 2, is this a security problem? The kernel is level 5, so kernel patches would not be delivered, right?

Re: deleted /tmp the other day

Shouldn't /tmp magically reappear when a program needs to use it? I've read other directories in root work this way.

Thanks for posting that. I was looking for a way in Mint to automatically install security updates only.

Re: Why can't I update to Cinnamon 1.6?

Great. Thank you guys.

And WOW, Cinnamon has really become amazing. It's so much more stable and polished than 1.4, even 1.5 was for me. A huge congrats to all the Mint developers.

^That did it, thank you.

Should I keep backports enabled or is that not a good idea?

Why can't I update to Cinnamon 1.6?

I just did a fresh install of Mint Maya with Cinnamon 1.4. Previously I had Cinnamon 1.6 installed from the Ubuntu PPA on cinnamon.linuxmint.com. I added the PPA again but Cinnamon doesn't show as available to update. Now I'm reading that it's in Romeo so I unmarked the gwendal PPA, checked Romeo. S...

Re: Duck-Duck-Go must go!

If you don't like it, go download and use the official Mozilla Firefox (like I do). 1. Extract the Firefox to your home folder Everything done in terminal from this point onwards: 2. sudo mv firefox /opt/ 3. sudo ln -sf /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/ 4. Remove old configuration files--> rm -rf /hom...

Re: Why is Firefox owned by root?

Thank you Vincent. I will give that a read. One thing but, I'm on Mint Debian and my Firefox is entirely in /opt. Even usr/bin/firefox is just a link to /opt. I have the mint stylish and mint search addons removed. I guess it's different in the Ladies of Mint?

Why is Firefox owned by root?

On a default Mint install, Firefox is located in /opt but is owned by root. Is this a security issue? Firefox has root privledges to do whatever it likes. Chrome from Google's website installs into /opt but it's owned by the user who installs it. Should chown or chmod be used on Firefox to take it o...

Re: When use tmpfs?

If you have enough memory, no reason why you should not mount /tmp in ram. To survive boots, it needs to be in fstab. For /var/lock, run, logs, there are cases where you may or may not want to do that. I say kep /var/logs out of ram so you have them when needing them. If you find your computer can't...

How is this then un-done? File permissions still say I'm the owner but I can't modify or remove it as su or with sudo.

Re: Packages of succeeding numerical versions

Thanks for the comments guys. I have some mono stuff and a few other libraries available for autoremvoe but deborphan shows me a big list of other things.

Squeezy, update-system seems to be a nice all in one way to update and remove old stuff. I will add --no-install-recommends to the config file.

Re: Mint X Theme broken?

Thanks zerozero, to get that murrine engine installed into the ancient Debian Stable needs 15 or so dependencies first. That's just where I stopped counting. I took an image of the OS and upgraded to Testing to see if it would have the same problem. This is what I get. http://i49.tinypic.com/1z48h7b...

Mint X Theme broken?

I'm trying to add the Mint looks to a Debian Squeeze computer with xfce. I have installed the following Mint packages but the theme is broken. gtk2-engines-murrine (0.90.3-2) mint-x-icons (1.0.7) mint-x-theme (1.0.7) gtk2-engines (1:2.20.1-1) mint-artwork-debian (2012.04.18) mint-artwork-xfce (2012....

Re: Slow boot

http://wiki.debian.org/BootProcessSpeedup Thanks for that link. I'm going to try Dash and the startup reconfigure it mentions. I remember when Ubuntu Maverick came out, the big deal was that it boots in 8 seconds on an ssd. They've put a ton of effort into boot time. On a 3 year old laptop, I went ...
