Re: Video Editing for .MOV files

I've played a bit with Openshot.... on a severely underpowered laptop ( I couldn't resist, it's the only machine with linux). ;-) taking .mov files from my kodak Zi8... and they were HD, so it struggled, but it was the laptop not Openshot.

Re: is there a way to turn off mouse post in laptop keyboard

Well, instead of opening it up and snipping a cable, I set it to serial mouse in BIOS, so the touchpad is also disabled and I have to use the USB wireless mouse, but at least my rage has subsided..lol

Re: is there a way to turn off mouse post in laptop keyboard

tried disabling it in BIOS, but that only works if I plug in a serial or ps2 mouse, not the usb wireless I have...I think I may have to do a trackstickectomy.

correct me if I'm wrong but that will disable both joystick and touchpad right? I want to keep the touchpad operational.

is there a way to turn off mouse post in laptop keyboard

title pretty much says it all. Dell D800 running Mint Julia without issue. But now, and I know this is probably a hardware issue, when I type the mouse floats down and to the left adn off the screen. the keyboard pointer barely controls it. On my wife's dell laptop I downloaded a dell app where I co...

Re: video edit software

I've only played with Openshot , it looks pretty comprehensive and simple to use. Cinelerra is another, but that has a larger learning curve (one I haven't tried yet as my linux machine isn't up to it. It does remind me a lot of Avid which I use every day.)

Re: What is wrong and how do i do it!

I'm running Mint 10 on a Dell D800, had issues when I first started, with a lot of stuff..lol what helped with the streaming video was getting rid of the proprietary nVidia drivers (they only seem to help with 3D type stuff anyway). Full screen still isn't that great but normal viewing of Utube etc ...

Re: Using Wine

I believe, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, you need to install the windows app (Quicken) under Linux so Wine can see it. At least that is what I did on my laptop (only running Mint 10) Not at that machine right now, but I believe I used it to install the Kindle App, which I have yet to get to w...

Re: How to delete another linux distro and not mess it up?

Mint is in /dev/.sda1 #! is /dev/sda6 (flagged as boot) which is under an extended partition dev/sda2 also part of that extended partition is dev/sda7 linux swap unallocated /dev/sda5 linux swap so if I delete sda6 which is flagged boot (and contains #!) will the system still boot, since that partit...

Re: How to delete another linux distro and not mess it up?

#! installed Grub, I have no idea where.( I don't remember having a choice in the install process, but it is all a blur right now) LOL I'll try deleting it's partition and updating grub and see what happens. If everything works then fine, if not I'll try something else ;-) thanks.

How to delete another linux distro and not mess it up?

I have Mint 10 Main edition installed, and I created another partition and installed CrunchBang. So after some issues (poor CMOS battery and figuring the nVidia drivers were pulling too much power and heating things up) I have Mint where I want it. Obviously Crunchbang is now the default in grub, so...

Re: Openshot Video Editor

I went to the advanced panel and exported as mpeg4 and all is well. Using Mint 10 main edition. What I did find interesting was that whiel I have 2 gb of Ram on this machine it only used about 700 mb while rendering, seems like I wasted some cash upping the ram on this box. ;-) I realize rendering i...

Re: Openshot Video Editor

I just installed the OpenShot editor on this old laptop. I just picked up a Kodak Zi8 and decided to run a little test. Interestingly even though this machine is severely underpowered for video it did pretty well. Except when it came to export, I went to go Youtube HD and it told me libx264 and anot...

Re: [SOLVED?]Need a laptop hardware guru

Final Update. Definitely the CMOS battery, I also disabled the proprietary nVidia drivers and videos play with much less CPU usage, don't drive up the temp, and suspend works... now when I close the lid it suspends, which it did with the nVidia drivers, but it would not come back from suspend with t...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

I'm going to mark this one solved, because it's as close as I can get. I burned a disc of the new Debian Mint XFCE but it took forever to load, I clicked on system monitor and it accessed the DVD but then never ran anything. I have to wonder out loud, why do distros like PCLOS and Crunchbang come wi...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

Trying to deduce what I did right, either the battery or the cpufreq command. so I decided to run the live version of Crunchbang. CPU is scaling (after installing cpufrequtils) CPU usage is about 33%, watching youtube videos are smooth and the fans don't kick on, and it didn't stress the CPU to 100%...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

Prompter works. Not sure what changed. Only two things that changed...new CMOS battery, and I went in and set the frequency at 1.8Ghz, trying to force it to stay at the top speed, but now it scales. I dunno, but it works, the fans are loud and the cpu heats up watching video, but it works. ;-) I'll ...

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

okay maybe I spoke too soon. I shut it down, a while later booted up and now it is scaling, watched a few vids, pused the cpu to 1800 and 100% and the cpu temp went up, fans roared but they played. Will have to check out the prompter but it's late that will have to wait.

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

Finally got a new CMOS battery. nearly 9 days via priority mail from NYC to NJ... anyway. It's not the issue. System, as I have said is running fine temp wise. It scales during the first minute it is running, then the governor locks it down at 600 mhz. I8k fan is running as it should. With that and ...
