Minimal and KDE
I am looking at switching from Kubuntu to Linux Mint. I am not a fan of Snaps, and I'm not sure I like where the Software Center is headed with Snaps. Long story short, I tried to install Chromium (via PPA) but it instead ignores the PPA and installs the Chromium Snap instead... Ugh.., Anyway, I wan...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?
I generally make the experience that Linux is considered a counter-culture and people using it claim to be uber geeks just because they managed to set up a Linux box. Many of them flame Windows users for still using Windows and don't accept that Windows works for them. Says the guy who's avatar is ...

Re: Mate or Cinnamon?
I have to start this by saying I am Pro-Cinnamon. (flame-protection) And I like everything about it, except the following: I have an Nvidia GTX260 Video Card, Quad-Core Phenom, 8 gigs of RAM. Loaded up 13 (not a VBox, a real install) with Cinnamon. Something about Cinnamon feels "laggy" Li...

Re: The actual use of good hardware.
I have a friend who has an old Dell Dimension 2400. 2.0 Celeron Processor, 512M PC2100 Memory, 250G HD. Nothing special. She only used it to browse the web. Well, she was having problems with it, becoming slow and such, so she asked me to take a look at it. It was DOG SLOW. Slower than molasses craw...

Re: Mate or Cinnamon?
+1 for MATE on Mint 13. Tried both variants, preferred MATE. Stability and performance win over looks every time. That being the case, you'd be using XFCE. :) I much prefer Cinnamon as it feels much more mature than MATE in my opinion. I've had nothing but issues with MATE when I tried it. I think ...

Re: Cinnamon to be default in Mint 13?
I would say that it isn't worth it because of that. Just adding unnecessary crap to your system in my opinion. If you want to try out one or the other, then throw it up in a virtual machine, and keep the one you like the most installed on your main hardware. I don't mind having two interfaces on my...

Re: The actual use of good hardware.
I use my hardware for video games (on Windows and Linux), but I don't find that it's really necessary. It's kind of just a nice thing to have (I know that's not the best answer). I guess if you're doing intense work (video editing, gaming, compiling, etc), it's helpful. Actually, that is more of th...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?
I never said it was a replacement for windows, I get it, I just said I found it more complicated. The beauty of Linux is that because there are so many Distro's out there that the chances are you will find the right one for you.... but not permanently  That's great! Most people don't quite un...

Re: Cinnamon to be default in Mint 13?
My question is: If you download the Mint 13 MATE ISO, will adding Cinnamon to it cause problems, or vice versa?

The actual use of good hardware.
I'm an avid Linux user, and I am a gamer. But I run Steam in Windows for my games, and Linux Mint for everything else. I have an AMD Phenom 9750 (Quad Core), and an Nvidia GTX260 for Graphics, 8-G of DDR3 Ram. Don't worry about HDD Space, that's irrelevant for performance. This hardware option comes...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?
@zebedeeboss I can understand what you're talking about. Windows is "familiar". This is why you keep going back to it to get things done. You are more used to the software and the operations of Windows. This is not a "bad" thing. A lot of Linux users are Dual Booters. I myself, s...

Re: Mate or Cinnamon?
Xfce and Gnome2/MATE are similar. Two of my favorite desktops. Some time back in the midst of the Gnome 3 debacle I suggested several times that Mint should use Xfce for their default desktop. I still think it would have been a good choice. I actually think Cinnamon is a great step forward for Mint,...

It's a tradition? Clem has a new daughter every 6 months or so? Quite the little baby factory going on there.xenopeek wrote:Maya is named after Clem's daughter. So don't be crass, and it is tradition (http://www.linuxmint.com/oldreleases.php)

I haven't noticed much of a difference from XFCE and Gnome 2. I have always wondered why MATE is even necessary.KBD47 wrote:Prefer MATE over Cinnamon, it seems a bit more mature and configurable, but either is a good choice

All I know, is I've never had issues with having grub installed into its own directory, and using EasyBCD to adjust the Windows Bootloader.mintybits wrote:...it doesn't matter whether the boot directory is in root or in a separate partition. The problem is really with the ext file-system format.

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?
@ Shiblet: You can't run device drivers in Wine. Only Windows drivers that you can use on Linux are wifi drivers with ndiswrapper. Yeah, the ndiswrapper never seemed to work well for me in the past. And the logical portion of my previous statement was definitely flawed. In order to run Windows Driv...

Re: What do you not like about Cinnamon?
I think it's possible, but nothing noob friendly about it. Clicking on the add applets option takes you to links describing how to install things if I remember correctly. In MATE you simply right click on the panel and add the applets. I think Cinnamon is very 'noob' friendly. By 'noob' I mean a 'W...

Re: GRUB + Windows 7 = Restart
Check my post here about how to install for Windows 7. My "Second" option works the best for me. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=102097 Unfortunately, there is a reliability issue when Grub is installed to a PBR rather than the MBR. I have done this myself and it work...
