Re: Wifi not working

Thanks very much Pjotr. I'm sure I've tried that before and it didn't work.
Saved at the last moment - my friend can now be enhaunced to Linux Mint.

Re: Wifi not working

Surprising last minute progress. I ran modified version of code from this thread - https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=273382 and the wifi levels increased drastically and I connected without reboot. sudo modprobe -r rtl8723be sudo modprobe rtl8723be ant_sel=1 iwlist scan | egrep -i 'SSID|l...

Re: Wifi not working

Thanks for the good advice Pjotr Sadly my time has run out. It took me two days to get dual boot working and I've promised my wife today will be the last. Also my forgetful attempt to install the new driver with secure boot enabled means that win10 no longer works in that mode. My only hope is to ge...

Re: Wifi not working

If I rerun the install I get
Module rtlwifi-new/0.6 already installed on kernel 4.15.0-54-generic/x86_64
so I don't understand why I don't see rtlwifi-new in the lsmod | grep rtl output list.

Wifi not working {SOLVED}

Hi - sorry to butt in - I'm on the 3rd day of struggling with the same issue . I ran the RTLwifi_new driver commands as show but did it omitting switching secure boot off. So I would like to install again but it will not let me . I need to uninstall first but no idea how to. However it may have been...

Re: Urgent - Secure Boot Problem (SOLVED)

Thanks Pierre = I thought I had sorted it when my wifi finally connected. I browsed for 15 minutes and rolled up my ethernet cable. When I later returned it could not get internet but was still connected to wifi - all very frustrating :( After that it would not reconnect to the wifi again. Today is ...

Re: Urgent - Secure Boot Problem

the changing of the Boot method may cause issues with the Windows System. one method that I've tried out, is to Install Off-line, and thus the Secure boot Issue seems to be by-passed. & once you've got an successful Dual_Boot is working, then you can have another attempt at getting the wireless car...

Urgent - Secure Boot Problem (SOLVED)

In an attempt to get Realtek RTL8723BE to connect to wifi on my dual boot win10/Mint19.1 hp notebook I ran terminal commands to install new driver. Unfortunately I missed the comment to remove secure boot and have now run the install. At reboot I am presented with Operation System Boot Change Menu. ...

Re: Unable to connect to home WiFi in Linux Mint

You can try to install latest driver from rtlwifi-new github repo with following commands. You must disable secureboot before this. 1. Install requirements sudo apt-get install build-essential git dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r) 2. Download source and install rtlwifi-new driver with following comman...

Re: 2 do or not 2 do - that is the question

Managed to get boot-repair to restore files and run win10 again. Turned fast startup off. I'm trying to understand boot-repair Advanced Options. Most seem to be set in default. Maybe the one I want is Backup and rename windows EFI which is not set. If I selected this do I untick other options? eg Us...

Re: 2 do or not 2 do - that is the question

Now I have gone one step back. I ran boot-repair again - http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/sGqdVDHRNx/ which failed and now win10 is not starting although I can still run Mint via the esc key. Maybe win10 was not shutdown fully from the file system and now I cannot run it at all :(

Re: 2 do or not 2 do - that is the question

I am now set for legacy boot (I seem to have lost the bios option to re enable secure boot). However I can now run my new mint by pressing esc after power button. This gives a HP menu of F key options. F9 gives Boot Options - Boot Manager. I can now select the Mint (Ubuntu) startup which at last bri...

Forgot the KISS principle, see if you can boot with secure boot off.
Did that earlier but still no joy. Also the bios does not give any secure boot options.

Re: 2 do or not 2 do - that is the question

I am making some progress but there is one question - 19.1 was installed with secure boot enabled. After install do I have to enable Legacy boot or leave it as was?

Re: 2 do or not 2 do - that is the question

In a worst-case scenario vis a vis Wi-Fi, you might go on Amazon and get a fairly dirt cheap Atheros chipset-based USB Wi-Fi adapter. The last time I looked, there were a lot of $10-$20 options. I was hoping to convert my friend to Linux on the basis that it will be so much simpler and more respons...

Did you install Mint using UEFI with secure boot off? Also, please check in bios setup and see if SATA mode is set to AHCI.
Yes with secure boot off. I cannot see a SATA mode in the bios

Re: 2 do or not 2 do - that is the question

OK - I've decided to just go for a dual boot. All seemed to complete ok using defaults but I have seen no boot options choices. So now it just boots straight to win10 as before. Do I have to now enable Legacy boot in yhe bios?

2 do or not 2 do - that is the question (SOLVED)

A friend has bought me her shiney Windows 10 HP 15-ba077sa Notebook. She is not PC savey and only needs to read emails and browse the internet. The notebook runs so incredibly slow and bombards her with update notices which require subscriptions. She quite rightly feels it is unusable and is incline...
