Re: What are your top tips for a Newbie?

I have two tips for newbies: 1. Learn to Google, learn to Wiki, and learn to forum. You are never going to be the first person to run into a problem. I've been tinkering with Linux since 2009, and I still need to Google things now and then. 2. Don't be afraid of the terminal or other command-line in...

Re: LM12 Install - serious driver issues (wi-fi, touchpad &U

Well, unfortunately, "upgrading" existing Ubuntu/Mint installations rarely works smoothly. Even upgrading from one version to the next tends to create weird bugs and instabilities. My first piece of advice to you: don't ever upgrade with Ubuntu/Mint; always do clean installs. While we're on the subj...

Re: Linux OS

Oh, my, the wall of text. Entering the world of Linux can be turbulent, especially if you don't have anyone with you to help out. I started with Ubuntu 9.10 on my own, and gave up on it several times. However, when I install Linux on other peoples' computers, tweak it up a bit for them, and show the...

Re: Error in updating-recently

Try this in a terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get clean
Then go ahead and try to update again.

If that doesn't work:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-key del 40976EAF437D05B5
sudo apt-get update

Re: Linux mint internet issues! HELP!!!

Running the CD in Virtualbox won't help you. You probably should've looked online first to see if the adapter is easily compatible with Linux. A quick Google search indicated to me that you're going to have a tough time making that adapter work. =/

Re: Linux mint internet issues! HELP!!!

Unfortunately, the only good cure for bad hardware is to replace that hardware. Luckily, network adapters come cheap - if you just want some Internet, you can find a $20-ish USB dongle that should work just fine. Be sure to run it through a quick Google search first, to make sure it plays nice with ...

Re: iphone: Unable to mount iPhone

You might be behind a firewall that is preventing the key import. This happens. Try disabling the firewall.

Re: Linux mint internet issues! HELP!!!

Your network adapter is not being detected. A quick Google search brought up a possible match, a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx. Unfortunately, the adapter is not supported by the generic kernel for some reason, so you would likely have to recompile your own for ideal support. You'd be better off installin...

It sounds like your laptop's ethernet is not being recognized by the generic kernel. Could you tell us what the specific laptop model is, down to the exact numbers?

Re: Suspend to RAM has stopped working after some updates

In some cases, a kernel update can result in some hardware bugs. You may have upgraded to a kernel that your computer doesn't want to suspend with. If this is the case, you can try booting to a previous kernel (your system doesn't delete old kernels automatically) with a package called startupmanage...

Re: How can I change "alt+click" binding?

Solved. Turns out Cinnamon still relies on metacity for this particular function.

1. gconf-editor
2. apps -> metacity -> general
3. mouse_button_modifier

Solved: How can I change "alt+click" binding?

Hello, I just stuck Cinnamon onto a fresh LM 12 x64 install. Great work on everything so far! I've set everything up mostly the way I like it, and I'm quite comfortable with the desktop, which is more than I could say for Gnome Shell no matter how many extensions I packed onto it. With that aside, I...

Re: New computer - Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820T

Cheers from another happy 3820T owner. It handled Linux Mint 10 like a dream with only a few tweaks, and it's now on Fuduntu 14.10 and still smooth as silk. I swapped out the hard drive for an OCZ Vertex 2 60GB SSD (about $120, thanks for asking), and now I boot up in less than 20 seconds and every ...
