Re: re lenovo laptop

Hi Emmet, The biggest problem you are going to have is that your laptop is currently configured with 4 partitions (almost certainly all set as Primary because that is how the manufacturers try to stop you from installing anything other than Windows). You will need to back up your current data before...

Re: How can I keep track of when the internet goes down?

I would actually recommend taking Linux out of the equation totally. Go to http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ and register an account there. Then you can create a monitor online which will constantly run a diagnosis, based on the FB6000 system, of your Broadband. If you were to take a snapshot every 24 ...

Re: super slow USB speeds MInt 9x64 LTS!!!!

Having looked through your other posts you should be well aware that there is not a fix for this yet - you have posted comments in other threads relating to this issue, which include links to the Ubuntu bug tracker as well as various other links on this issue. I have never experienced this problem, ...

Re: Linux Mint 12 KDE released!

No reply yet? Just to say 'Thank You' to the whole team. I have been using Mint 12 as a Live image, but haven't bothered to actually install it as I have been waiting for the KDE spin to arrive. Now it has, I have to spend some time sorting it all out  Hopefully the release of this ...

Despite my flippant comment a couple of days ago, have you looked at installing 'bootchart'? It may just point you at the sort of information you are looking for.

Re: Dual Boot: Mint first or Windows

I would second the recommendation for Mint 9. When I last had Mint installed as my main system (unfortunately work stops me from getting the time to use it much nowadays) I was running Mnt 9. I found it to be much more stable and quicker than 10, 11 or 12 even though I did have to put in some work t...

Re: more speed

Lol  If I was running Mint 10 on that spec machine I suspect I would need bionic fingers to be able to do anything faster than the machine could cope with it. I have never understood the motivation in tweaking a system to the bones just to save 5 seconds on boot-up. If there is a genuine pe...

Re: Permission Problems

'passwd' is a command, but it is context dependent. Were you using the normal user-level console, or did you run it as root? Did you run the command on its own, or with 'sudo'? Are you sure that it was the root account password you actually changed? If you want some more information on the passwords...

Re: pass needed after comming out of suspend

If that doesn't work... First install the dconf editor if not already installed: sudo apt-get install dconf-tools Then run it: dconf-editor Check the check box at: org -> gnome -> desktop -> lockdown -> disable-lock-screen You know it is going to work right away if the "Lock Screen" menu i...

Re: pass needed after comming out of suspend

Two things to do... Administration>>Login Screen, enable the button "Login automatically". Even with automatic login set, the screen may lock on suspend/resume. In either Power Management, Screensaver, or Login you should find a box for "Lock Screen on Resume". Untick that box. I...

Re: Solved-"Laptop Battery Critically Low" at full charge

Came here following a link by Remoulder. It would be really useful if the Mint team could incorporate this into an updated Mint 12 Live image as it is a right P.I.T.A. having to make this change each time I boot off my LiveUSB stick.

Have you gone into "System Settings", "Screen" and unticked the box for "Dim screen to save power"?

Re: mintinstall segfault after opening on theme

Regardless of anything else, shouldn't MintInstall be run with gksudo/kdesudo? The OP posted
adam@Mint ~ $ sudo mintinstall

May not fix the fault he is having now, but may stop him having problems with permissions in the future.

Re: MintInstall keeps asking for password

Thanks AlbertP, that's why I wrote "I'm not sure this is exactly recommended". It is good to get confirmation from someone such as yourself. The main reason I ended up replying was due to being a little bit annoyed at the attitude of i22yb in his post anyway.

Re: MintInstall keeps asking for password

@ i22yb Whatever way things go you should never run a GUI application via 'sudo' - that is precisely why 'gksu' and 'kdesu' exist. Many graphical apps may appear to work correctly when run with 'sudo', but there can be all sort of wierd permissions that are screwed up by doing so. As for running Min...

Re: Not sure if this is a bug....

Good idea...

...but then everybody would be expecting the webserver (and probably Linux in general) to accept .jpG .jPg .Jpg .JPg .JpG .jPG as well as the same combinations for every other file extension out there

LOL

Hadn't thought of that comparison, but very, very apt.

Having said that, the thought of using SubZero to freeze GNOME at version 2 sounds like a good idea

Re: Modem command (AT commands)

Having had a quick poke around, I'd suggest you have a look at this page;- https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto As for the "ATI" command, I think you'll find that you actually need "ATI0" (zero) through to "ATI10) and maybe above, to give the specific informati...
