I downloaded Linux Mint MATE 19.2 and tried this on the Live USB and it worked. Thanks.

Thanks for the response. I'll take a look at it. This problem also affects a couple of senior citizens that have Linux on their computers.

Change Panel Font, Size and Weight In MATE 18.2 and Higher

Hello, I've been using Linux since 1998. Unfortunately, my eyes are no longer what they were 20 years ago and a larger and bold font for the panel and MATE menu are easier on my eyes than the default font when MATE is installed. I used to use gnome-color-chooser the change the panel font to Ubuntu 1...

Re: can I change root password

I'm able to log into X as root in Mint, but the Users and Groups applet starts then freezes with a spinning cursor. The Users and Groups applet is now configured to not allow being run by root (something to do with Policy Kit as I remember). I had a hardware failure many years ago. The drive contain...

yaye, i found https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/106699/enable-root-login-from-gui which allows a root login to the gui Thanks. When I have some time, I'll take a look at it. Time constraints are precisely why I want to able able to login to X as root. If I'm doing that it is because somethin...

Re: Linux mint software for ip cameras

Hello, You could try Motion, here is an article about it: https://www.linux.com/learn/how-operate-linux-spycams-motion It is in the repository for Linux Mint 18.2 (Probably there for earlier versions of Mint also). If you want something more complex, there is Zoneminder: https://www.linux.com/learn/...

Re: [SOLVED] No Sound from onboard audio, don't want sound from Nvidia HDMI

You're welcome. Strange that you don't have the sound applet on the panel. I don't have Cinnamon installed but I ran it from a USB drive on a computer with built in audio and an Nvidia video card with HDMI. I installed the codecs and I clicked the speaker icon at the bottom right corner of the scree...

You're welcome. Glad you found the fix. As long as the sound keeps coming out of both channels, you can try using the other, simpler volume control and mixer applets.

Yeah, the thinner one is a volume control and the thicker one reflects sound level like a VU meter. In Sound Control App, can you post a screenshot of the Configuration Tab? If it is not set to Analog Stereo Duplex, try setting it to that.

Re: No Sound on 64 bit XFCE Sonya install on Dell Inspiron Desktop after install.

Just a thought. Have you tried changing the channel to 2ch or 4 ch and seeing whether it affects where te audio goes? That might be similar to my option of FP Headphones, Headphones and Multichannel. Audio output goes to the rear speakers with Multichannel and to the headphones with FP Headphones. Y...

Re: No Sound on 64 bit XFCE Sonya install on Dell Inspiron Desktop after install.

I saw somewhere that using Windows can knock out audio in Linux, when the audio device is a Realtek ALC662 rev 3, but that was with Windows running in Virtualbox. I'm out of ideas for now. If I come across anything that may help, I'll post it. Hope you get it fixed. My first computer was an IBM clon...

Re: can I change root password

with Mint 18.2 is it no longer possible to give the root account a password This is easy and I had described it already 3 weeks ago. This is doable with all versions of Mint. and login graphically as well? .... If this is the case with Mint, I'll be looking for a new distro. Debian or Fedora. Do as...

Re: can I change root password

It is: sudo passwd But this only makes sense for making it a bit more difficult for an attacker with physical access to your computer, to get root permissions on your machine by booting it into recovery mode..................... ................Logging into a root desktop is beyond plain dumb. It's...

Go to Channel, see if you can change the output and if that gives you sound. You don't need the Mic turned up unless you are recording. You might want to turn down Master a bit. :) . I'll check back tomorrow and see if you are successful.

Re: No Sound on 64 bit XFCE Sonya install on Dell Inspiron Desktop after install.

Those little arrows at the right edge mean there are more sliders to the right. Click on the right edge and pull it to the right. There may be an option (Analog Output) to change the output between Headphones, Front Panel Headphones and Multichannel (rear speakers). This is the only way I can change...

Re: can I change root password

what i don't like is not having a separate admin password which prevents lots of attacks by unskilled or lazy criminals. I agree. So karlchen, with Mint 18.2 is it no longer possible to give the root account a password and login graphically as well? This is what finally drove me away from Ubuntu. I...

The Master slider is highlighted (in red). Use the right arrow key to go to Headphones, then use the up key to turn up the headphone volume.
