Re: Linux and OS in general
On Valve’s interest in Linux “The big problem that is holding back Linux is games. People don’t realize how critical games are in driving consumer purchasing behavior. “We want to make it as easy as possible for the 2,500 games on Steam to run on Linux as well. It’s a hedging strategy. I think Windo...

Re: is an OEM type setup possible?
I was googling around for a solution to this and found this way. Oh and read the comments before kicking off the installation as it seems there is an even easier way!

Re: New Community Site Moderators
Thanks guys.
I doubt I'll spend much more time on the forums than I have done in the past; I moderate a couple of other forums also and don't want to commit to too much.

Re: Slow forum at evenings.
Sorry to go back on topic an' all but I just want to say thank you to the devs for sorting things out. I suppose we wouldn't complain if we didn't care.

Re: Slow forum at evenings.
Well, if community shares the same DB server and there are several hundred connections from there as well that would make a big difference. I've contacted Oscar799 and offered to look through the configs to see if anything leaps out as badly done.

Re: Slow forum at evenings.
Is the forum / community busier than normal? Mint has had a big write up in Linux Format with lots of mentions of the forums and community with developers urging reader to visit both and join in. An modest increase in traffic can have a massive impact when there are a few dodgy queries / indexes and...

Re: Google Chrome Problems
It may be that errors are being written to stdout, in such case, the command is exactly the same as before, excepting you replace the 2 with a 1. If that reveals nothing, I would disable (or even uninstall) all extensions and see if the problem goes away. If it does, I would start re-installing each...

Re: Google Chrome Problems
In such cases it is often worth running the software from a terminal as it may output some useful error messages. If the crash is so bad that you can't see the errors, you can try redirecting the stderr to a file. For example: /usr/bin/firefox 2>errors.txt which will run firefox and write any errors...

Re: Linux and OS in general
Well, I was never confused by the choices presented by Linux purely because I spent quite a bit of time reading up on what I was getting myself in to. I knew there were different distributions and desktop environments and I knew what desktop environments were. I knew there were different package man...

Re: Linux and OS in general
It's true, shiny does sell. That's why all the people in adverts on telly are good looking and attractive. Or to put it another way; shiny. One argument that noone has made in favour of Linux yet is that it is far more environmentally friendly than any other operating system. I'll pause a moment to ...

Re: Linux and OS in general
Personally, I feel sorry for those people who's brains are so limited, they can't deal with making a choice. It must make their day to day lives very difficult indeed. I mean, what soup do you have for lunch?

Re: Why eth2 but no eth1 and eth0 ?
]My system (also LMDE) used eth1 as well. The 70-persistent-net.rules file had an entry named eth0 which had nothing to do with my computer. It referenced a device that didn't exist anywhere on my LAN (PCI device 0x1022:0x2000 (pcnet32), MAC beginning with 08:00:27 - I wonder if that's the same on ...

Re: Linux and OS in general
With the examples you've cited, they're all around us physically. Users of Linux are not at all common. So I'm not sure your analogy is appropriate (or fair). Of course it's appropriate and fair. They are all major decisions that have a massive impact on your life. Given that the average person is ...

Re: Linux and OS in general
One of the things that held me back from switching to Linux was the "noise" about distros and DEs. While it's all in the right spirit, it's quite overwhelming for a newbie to take in :D and a newbie can be forgiven for wondering whether one distro/DE is worse than another (rather than jus...

Re: Linux and OS in general
Which from what I've seen you do very well Vincent. Also willing to admit that's definitely a form of contribution and any show of support, has to be better than none. Just saying the whole grass roots and community nature of linux isn't really there. People aren't promoting and spreading the word ...

Re: Why eth2 but no eth1 and eth0 ?
Using LMDE: Have a look in the directory /etc/udev/rules. There should be a file called nn-persistent-net.rules, mine is 70-persistent-net.rules. This file defines your interfaces and sure enough, I have eth0, eth1 and wlan0. I checked my networks and sure enough, despite having only one wired netwo...

Re: POLL: Are you tracking new Mint Repo or "Debian Testing"
Tracking latest on my main machines (desktop laptop and netbook). Considering using incoming or something completely different on my other box. How useful is it to the devs for me to track incoming?
