Re: gm10's Linux Mint Tools PPA

Question: Since somebody brought up contributing to translations in another thread, is there any further interest in that, and if yes, what's your preferred way of doing it - via launchpad like for Mint, via GitHub, Transifex, something else? Nothing beats Transifex! Incomparable ease of use. And p...

Re: [SOLVED] Flatpack?

The Software Manager offers normal and Flatpak versions of some software. In other words, look closely which version you are installing if you wish to avoid Flatpak. It's even possible to remove the Flatpak infrastructure completely: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/clean-mint.html#ID6 (...

Re: Best Linux OS for older devices

It's not the operating system that renders antique PIII's virtually unusable. It's the modern web browser.

Try this: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/speed-mint.html#ID11 (item 11) And make sure that your wireless network meets the following requirements: - WPA2 Personal - AES only (no TKIP) - SSID visible - optimal channel (preferably fixed, not dynamic/automatic) Explanation: https://easylin...

Re: Best Linux OS for older devices

Friend of mine has a ¨skeleton¨ Linux distro (probably antiX) loaded up on a rather ancient IBM branded P3 laptop which seems capable of basic recreational computing (surfing, emailing). A P3? Web surfing with an up to date modern web browser? Hard to believe. Very hard. In fact, I don't believe it...

Re: Questions about Mint 19.2

The only bothersome bug I've encountered in 19.2 so far, is that the icon of Update Manager in the Cinnamon panel, sometimes doesn't show right. Minor annoyance.... The most striking improvements of 19.2 for me, are the new features in Update Manager and above all, the better font rendering. Clearer...

Re: Which browser is recommended?

Whatever you choose: I recommend to stick to the big ones. Firefox, Chrome, Chromium or Opera. Only the big ones get enough and timely security maintenance from their large security developer teams. The small ones simply don't have the manpower to keep it up. Note that your web browser is, by far, t...

Re: A Different Set of Installation Instructions

Note that you can install two Google-made free fonts as replacements for Microsoft's Calibri and Cambria. And you can configure Libre Office to use them as such: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/libre-office.html#ID6 (item 6) Perhaps a link in your notes? :P I'm assuming the notes are yo...

Re: A Different Set of Installation Instructions

Regarding Microsoft's fonts, those in the repository are from 1999 (due to licensing issues) and do not contain all the "features" of the fonts users are used to on Windows these days. Just something to be aware of when recommending to install them. Interesting. I'll look more into this. If you hav...

Re: Finally [SOLVED] no reboot or shutdown (a 6 month tale of woe with kernel 5)

Please pardon my ignorance, but what are "C" states and why are they important to using Linux on an AMD system? I was running (albeit a short time) my AMD 1700 on an X370 mobo for a short time with no issues. So now I am worried that if I build a Ryzen system it will bork itself if I run Linux. It'...

Also a word (of wisdom, I hope) on the subject of encryption. As Catweazle already indicated, it might lead to irrecoverable data loss when used carelessly. Be restrictive with it. Don't use any encryption on a static machine that never leaves your home, and only use it on laptops that do leave the ...

Re: A Different Set of Installation Instructions

This thread hasn't furthermore seen discussion of "chkrootkit". To OP: I've never seen it identify anything that was not a false positive and would as such be strictly against advising it to newbies, who'd not have a clue that its warnings were false positives. With that I fully agree. chkrootkit m...

Much like, theory aside, chopping of one's peepee is best practice regarding avoiding unwanted pregnancies. Haha. Re: A Different Set of Installation Instructions

The idea of not installing Wine, Java, or Mono don't sit well with me. I think too many people would want to use these. Which brings the question: if I'm running a cross platform program, wouldn't I need a virus scanner? Well, let's put it this way: why bring down the superior level of security of ...

Re: A Different Set of Installation Instructions

What would you suggest to a newbie if Linux Mint is being used in an airport or hotel on business? A simple firewall seems like the best idea for a user on the go. Or is there something better I'm not aware of? Practical rule of thumb: enable the firewall in all cases, except when it's a static des...

No experience with that machine, but don't worry: 99 % chance that Mint will run beautifully on it. The Linux kernel is a marvellous work.

If you do encounter some issues, those can usually be solved easily. Don't hesitate to ask for help here, if needed.

Re: Battery drain

One thing came to my mind. I am running kernel 5.2.8-050208, shouldn't that be a newer kernel than 5.2.0-10? Kernel versioning downstream (Ubuntu/Mint) is different from upstream (kernel.org). The downstream version 5.2.0-10 has another version upstream: pjotr@medion-akoya:~$ cat /proc/version_sign...

Re: A Different Set of Installation Instructions

It has them install clamAV and chkrootkit. This automatically means few experienced Linux users would recommend your instructions. No point having new Linux desktop users coming from Windows believe there to continue to be a realistic need for that nonsense. +1 Even more so, because AV actually dec...
