Re: It's like Microsoft is driving you toward Linux

...Microsoft does not give a s*** about their users and feels they can do d*** near anything they feel like with total impunity. Is simply the consistent implementation of freedom: They can - so they do. I know of a larger state doing the same thing... Not so in the land of the proud Swiss... God, ...

Re: Security Resources/Tutorials?

Pjotr, two things...regarding the "Improve the settings for installing software1.2.1." section of "10 Things To Do First in Linux Mint 19.1 Xfce", when I input "sudo sed -i 's/false/true/g' /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00recommends" into the terminal following the previous step, nothing seems to happen. Wha...

Re: Security Resources/Tutorials?

My Firefox has been configured to dump all history and cookies upon closing. I'd like to ask: How does clearing your browser {u}history[/u] help in any way, shape or form, even with browser issues? I totally rely on it; it's a subsitute for my lack of inbuilt (human, if I can call it that) memory &...

Re: Pjotr-need your old script for removing all but last 2 kernels

Is this it? https://github.com/Pjotr123/purge-old-kernels-2 Yes. :) It can also still be found on the "clean Ubuntu" page on my website: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/clean-ubuntu.html#ID5 (item 5) Mint has this cool in-built kernel removal tool in Update Manager nowadays (thanks to o...

systemd is unlikely, but for the rest I don't know. Could be anything, up to and including hardware failure.... Very strange. :?

Re: Security Resources/Tutorials?

You mentioned the importance of being highly selective of which Firefox Add-ons to trust. What is your opinion of Ghostery, Ublock Origin, and Noscript? All three are of good repute. But personally, of those three I only install uBlock Origin. Not invasive, not talkative and just works. I often run...

Re: Wifi doesn't appear after suspend

Please generate an overview of your system like this: - Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window) ; - make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines; - Copy/paste this command into the terminal: inxi -Fxz (if you type: the letter F is a capital letter) Press En...

Did you perhaps inadvertently turn off WiFi by means of the Fn key combination that does that (airplane mode)? Or did you flip a hardware switch?

Re: Lubuntu: Welcome to LXQt

However, my netbook is running 17.3 and I'm going to be installing the unofficial LXDE 18.3 spin from Gernany in the next couple of days. At linuxmintusers.de the Germans also have made available an unofficial LXDE spin of Linux Mint 19.1 : https://www.linuxmintusers.de/index.php?topic=52646.0 I ha...

Re: Security Resources/Tutorials?

I'm just hopeful of finding more tools that will further augment and simplify the threat detection process. You don't need them for desktop Linux. Perhaps stuff like that can be useful in the poisonous and heavily infected Windows ecosystem, but you've escaped from that. Relax, you're running Linux...

Re: How to downgrade Java version

Are you quite sure that you need version 8? Usually, Java/OpenJDK is fully backwards compatible. So version 11 should do the job as well.

Probably two different packages for two different elements pertaining to the Linux kernel. Just install both.

Or, if you're curious: close Update Manager and do sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. That should give you more information.

Re: freeze issue

OK, try this:

1. Disable all visual effects:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... html#ID5.3
(item 5.3)

2. Upgrade in-place to 19.1: Update Manager - panel: Edit - Upgrade to "Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa".

3. Reboot.

Re: Lubuntu: Welcome to LXQt

The load on the graphics subsystem/hardware is, to some extent, different from the general RAM load... Fair enough. But is there some proof somewhere that this actually makes a difference? Knowing how this actually works I don't see that it would make much difference at all. In my personal experien...

Re: Lubuntu: Welcome to LXQt

Interesting that in the future Kubuntu may be the lightest Ubuntu version. I think Lubuntu made a big mistake leaving that title on the table. I can't count how many times over the years people pointed new users toward Lubuntu when they needed a lighter OS. If it is as heavy or heavier than Xfce or...

German Easter fire with an unexpected twist

In the east of The Netherlands, people like to light Easter fires. Good old Saxon tradition. Forbidden this year, because of the draught. Not so somewhat further to the east, in Germany. A small one with an unexpected twist, by a German guy, filmed by his tender loving wife: https://twitter.com/Odi1...
