Should I do this?
Yes, or I wouldn't advise it.

How long would I wait for an update of the current kernel to fix my problem?

Why, Xfce has autostarts too.
Unlike Cinnamon, in Xfce I need that script for a "Session and Startup" item.... It doesn't matter, because it works fine and does the job. The people that previously never installed any updates at all, now always install them.

Last step of the how-to:

Code: Select all

Re: gm10's Linux Mint Tools PPA

Oh well, I already have a workaround in place; a script which launches automatically after logging in: #! /bin/bash sleep 99 && zenity --info --text="Check for updates by clicking OK in this popup window!" mintupdate exit 0 Not for myself, but for a couple of digitally challenged people whose sysad...

Re: Wifi is very weak

OK, I advise this:

1. An antenna selection switch, because HP is too stingy to apply two antenna wires:

(item 2)

2. Possibly another driver as well:

Re: gm10's Linux Mint Tools PPA

OK, let's put this issue aside for the moment.... Another feature request: I would like mintupdate to have a setting in the Preferences for generating a popup window when there are updates available. In order to help remind inadvertent Ubuntu users to install those updates, more or less in th...

Re: where to install drivers for wireless card

With the wireless card inserted, please generate an overview of your system like this: - Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window) ; - make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines; - Copy/paste this command into the terminal: inxi -Fxz (if you type: the lette...

Re: CLAMAV not working (solved)

Glad everyone was able to help this person...however, as someone who works in cyber security and pentesting telling people "Oh you never need to worry about malware or a virus on LINUX!" is very misleading and false information. Although the likely-hood of contracting malware or a virus on a UNIX b...

Re: gm10's Linux Mint Tools PPA

I continue to invite feedback and suggestions, but I do not owe anybody anything. That is a fact. Same goes for me, for the how-to's I publish on my websites. Many people have opinions and advice about those as well. Some I choose to adopt, others I don't. That's up to me and nobody else....

Re: gm10's Linux Mint Tools PPA

Yes, I can understand that a double maintenance job isn't alluring.... More work, and a bit boring as well. :) Alright, maybe some compromise is possible that will still increase the attraction for Ubuntu users with stable production systems (and for Mint users with such systems): one PPA, monthly r...

Last install I had come across a program for removing orphaned libs and configs. That seemed to work fine I guess.

Re: gm10's Linux Mint Tools PPA

OK, a new day, so a new opportunity to burden you with two feature requests: 1. Could you perhaps create a configuration option in mintupdate with which users can disable the official default Ubuntu updater? It would be handy if users can essentially replace the Ubuntu update service by mintupdate. ...

Re: gm10's Linux Mint Tools PPA

Works. I've found some localization errors: in the Preferences window of mintupdate, section Automatic Maintenance, the following items aren't translated: Last Run and Next Run . Also those show the CEST time and date, which differ from the time zone for the system (Dutch). Furthermore, the day name...

Re: gm10's Linux Mint Tools PPA

Oh, you mean the problem was that you need to install mintsystem first, not that it did not install at all? Yeah, fair enough, that's working as intended, we had the same issue on Mint when Clem changed the pins so I pin the backports package in mintsystem. Although I may actually know how to prope...
