Re: How to update intel drivers?
A good guess from you. And not an overreaction from me: examples of systems wrecked by this PPA are numerous. My own systems included (been there, done that). The oibaf PPA is bleeding edge, but more bleeding than edge. Bloody, is perhaps an even more apt term. Cowboy stuff (yeehaw!). Even...

Re: How to update intel drivers?
I see you have Mesa 24.2~git2405230600.2abdc8~oibaf~j . This PPA is know to have "bleeding edge" bugs since it packages straight from git (code that is not even part of a released version yet). Good find. That PPA is a notorious horrible system destroyer. I recommend a fresh insta...

Bad idea. User settings and files that are meant for one distro, might be unsuitable for the other. Don't do it.

If you're not only new to Linux Mint but also new to Linux in general, I strongly recommend to switch to the main Linux Mint, which is Ubuntu based. LMDE is only fit for experienced Linux users.

Re: Is Ubuntu/Canonical evil, and should I switch to LMDE?
"non-free" does not equal "evil". Intellectual property, when not exaggerated, stimulates progress. We should not be too ideological about making money. And, we should take human nature as it is. On the other hand, we should guard against things like uncalled-for privacy b...

Re: Should I remove old timeshift snapshots ?
First do some manual cleaning (delete old snapshots in Timeshift by hand). Then configure it to be less exacting:

Re: How to update intel drivers?
This should take care of newer Intel drivers:
Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels
Install the latest kernel of the latest series (probably 6.8.x)
Reboot and test.

Re: What are the disadvantages of using "older" Linux kernels?
According to endoflife.date/linux, version 6.8 has already reached its end of life for 4 months. Do I need to manually update the kernel in Linux Mint, or am I missing something here? No need to upgrade. Ubuntu applies downstream maintenance to its kernels (Mint uses Ubuntu kernels, you get 'em str...

Re: firefox browser locking up with certain websites
A computer of about 15 years old (BIOS is from 2008), is simply too weak and slow for average modern desktop use.

Ancient weak hardware. Apply these safe speed tweaks, but expect no miracles on that museum piece:

I can read those comments just fine in Firefox. Create another user account, log in as that user, don't change anything and test. Do you have the same problem then? Yes, I did what you suggested and can see the comments as per normal Well, obviously there must be some user setting(s) that cause you...

Re: Is Ubuntu/Canonical evil, and should I switch to LMDE?
Just stick to main Ubuntu-based Linux Mint, for as long as the Mint dev team makes it available. Leave the worrying to the Mint devs. And Canonical is not evil. It's a fine company, produces fine products like desktop Ubuntu and has done an incredible service for the general acceptance of des...

Please generate an overview of your system like this: - Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window) ; - Make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines; - Copy/paste this command into the terminal: inxi -Fxxxpmrz (if you type: the letter F is a capital letter, and...

Try switching window managers and compositors for a bit, and stick to the window manager / compositor combination that does the best job on your hardware:

Does it also happen when you're running an official kernel?
