Re: Software Manager in 18.3 ... Wowzers!!!

Yes. The downside of staying with xorg is of course, that it's really old software with thousands of patches, who aren't always consistent. A bewildering maze of code, which doesn't meet modern quality standards anymore. So in itself, it's about time that a fresh new replacement arrives.... But one ...

Re: Software Manager in 18.3 ... Wowzers!!!

Jeremy, can you please describe a little bit what is needed, to make Synaptic run in 17.10? (Regarding plan b: apt on the command line?) A lot: https://askubuntu.com/questions/961967/why-dont-gksu-gksudo-or-launching-a-graphical-application-with-sudo-work-with-w It's nasty. My guess is, that the Mi...

Malware of course. Almost certainly for Windows.

The only reliable updates for your Firefox, are being delivered by Update Manager. No exceptions.

Re: Software Manager in 18.3 ... Wowzers!!!

Pjotr, it might be time to find a plan b as Synaptic doesn't work in Ubuntu 17.10 without a workaround. Who knows if it will be fixed for Ubuntu 18.04 which will be the base of Linux Mint 19 Yes, that's a bad development.... :( But what matters most is what the Mint team will do. As mintupdate is b...

Re: Software Manager in 18.3 ... Wowzers!!!

@stormryder: if you wish to install something, you can have fine-grained details by using Synaptic. In Synaptic, by selecting Properties - Dependencies, you can check whether it depends on Wine.... While I appreciate what the Mint team has done for mintinstall, I must say I've never really used it e...

Try the latest kernel of the 4.13 series.

Reboot after installing it.

In some respects, compatibility is worse than in Windows. But in other respects, it's better than in Windows (e.g. old printers, old Nvidia video cards, etc.).

Re: System crashes with 4.10+ series kernels

Sticking to the 4.8 kernel series, even though it's outdated and no longer supported with security updates, is still a reasonable option. Even security updates for the kernel, usually have little practical relevance for a desktop user. :)

Re: Recent performance drop with NVidia card

Your current closed non-free video driver is probably your best option. So don't change it.

It should help if you disable all visual effects in Cinnamon:

Re: How to remove fonts unrelated to the OS language?

Better not remove any fonts that came with the default installation of Mint. They're expected to be present and might be used in unexpected circumstances. What's to gain by removing fonts anyway?

So I'm sorry to say that I can't reproduce his problem. It has been mentioned already in this thread by others: you might want to incr...
