Re: Neither ... nor, without neither.

Eradicating double negatives where one negative is meant, improves linguistical logic. So it would improve practical communication quality if we would avoid those logical abominations. Abominations to you. Completely logical to others. Like the American inch-pound-gallon measuring system. An abomin...

Re: The most frustrating thing about Mint

OK, I'm sure there are more frustrating things, am I'm not a real newbie (about 10 months now on Mint) but the simplest things sometimes are sooo bloody complicated on Mint (Cinnamon 18.3 before you ask). How do I simply plug in a USB pendrive and format it so that I can copy and paste documents? T...

Remove all old kernels in one stroke:

(item 9.1, right column)

By the way: thanks to our fellow forum member gm10, this'll become a lot easier in Mint 19.1. :)

Re: [WARNING: TEST RIGS ONLY] How to upgrade today from 19 Tara to 19.1 Tessa

Thanks for the easy instructions. Worked like a charm. I understand the warnings, but being an experienced Linux user I am ok with the risks. All my important files are in symlinked folders on another partition so even if it had gone horribly wrong an hour later I would be back where I was. That's ...

Re: Neither ... nor, without neither.

Languages taken logically and literally make no sense. To take it even further: language essentially is just arbitrary sounds and signs to which we attach meaning. But we can relativize everything in existence, including language, to shreds. That's not my point. My point is that in real pract...

Re: Linux Mint 19 no wi-fi connection

Try to boot from an older kernel. If that helps, remove the newer kernel.

By the way: don't use "sudo" when it's not necessary. You don't need it for rfkill and ifconfig. Unnecessary use of sudo can produce all kinds of nasty problems.

Re: Neither ... nor, without neither.

As Moem says. All human languages are mostly logical, but (sigh) never quite .... There is a point to be made for increasing the logic in human languages: after all, language is the primary tool we use for communicating with each other, and logic decreases the chance of misunderstandings. The logica...

Re: Another 54 year old newbie joined the Linux club...

Welcome! :) Linux Mint should also be installable on a Macbook.... If I'm not mistaking, that's even what the lead developer of Mint (Clément Lefebvre) is running his Mint on. I have no experience with Apple hardware, but if you post a support question for that on this forum, I'm sure that someone w...

Re: Neither ... nor, without neither.

Fun to read! In general, I tend to prefer British English over American English.... Not in the least because I was taught British English at school. Interestingly, American English has some logical errors that are also customary in the Dutch dialect where I live (Brabant): the logically wr...

Re: LTS release?

Oh thanks! I'm gonna take a look. I was wondering if it was indeed possible Yes, but I strongly recommend to do a clean fresh installation when upgrading from one Mint series (e.g. 18.x) to a newer Mint series (e.g. 19.x). Upgrading within a series (e.g. from 19 to 19.1) can safely be done in-place...

The current stable release of GIMP is 2.10.8, this is available in the software manager via the flatpack tab.

Best solution for the topic starter, I think.

I don't know what applet you mean, but you might try pavucontrol for optimal sound control:

That's an amusing question.

Look, I've already pointed out to you the approach that the French would call "bon sens". Persisting against "bon sens" won't get you very far....

Multiboot system with another Linux? If so, check the dominant Grub.

Bollocks. Noobs typically don't have multiboot systems with more than one Linux.

I see Pjotr's repository and others seem to have tested it but being a noob I'm looking for something from the devs
It's not my repo. The command that I described, switches your Mint 19 repo's from the official Tara repo's to the official Tessa repo's.

Just encountered another 15" MacBook Pro with defective video card. Did the same firmware update to disable the card and deleted the xserver entries. The Mac runs like a top now (in Mint, of course). Saved the unit from the recycling center. :D You make me eager to get one, too.... Apple makes grea...

Re: How to prevent a specific kernel upgrade

Here's another pull request for you to subscribe to, blacklisting of individual versions: https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdate/pull/421 Unfortunately that didn't make it into 19.1 anymore, because it would be perfect for the present situation otherwise. You're making the crown jewel of Linux Min...
