Re: Sound disappeared Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia

Can you post screenshots of all the tabs of pavucontrol?

You can use www.postimage.org for posting the screenshots.

Also: applying all level 4 updates is worth trying (reboot after doing so).

Re: Laptop suddenly shuts down when battery reaches 50%

Could be a dying battery, or a hiccup in the battery firmware.... Maybe you can achieve some improvement by removing the battery from your laptop, waiting five minutes and then re-assembling it. When no avail: check the website of the laptop manufacturer for a BIOS update and when available, install...

Re: Sound disappeared Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia

First of all: upgrade your kernel to the latest one of either the 4.13 series or the 4.15 series. Your current kernel is insecure and vulnerable for Meltdown/Spectre. Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels After installing it, reboot and test your sound again. If need be, we'll take it from th...

Re: Update breaks my display, slows my computer down and makes it freeze

If you have a Grub memtest option: use it. For disk health, use the application Disks (if need be, after booting from the Mint DVD).

Looks like a seriously broken system, then.... Check the health of your RAM and your hard disk.

Themes, styling.... And some revenue from the default search engine, which pays for the honour of being the default.

Re: Update breaks my display, slows my computer down and makes it freeze

That's bad.... Does it help when you boot into a root desktop and then re-install the Intel video driver?

Code: Select all

apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel

Re: Update breaks my display, slows my computer down and makes it freeze

1. Try a graphics driver switch, by forcing the use of the modesetting driver:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-intel
Reboot.

2. Disable all visual effects in Xfce:

Re: Welke keuze te maken

Oudere computer: kies beslist lichtgewicht Xfce. En pak meteen de nieuwste, namelijk Mint 19 bèta. Reden: die is al heel goed, en als je 'm dagelijks bijwerkt, dan wordt-ie vanzelf identiek aan de definitieve versie (die ik binnen een week verwacht). Hier zit-ie: http://ftp.tudelft.nl/linuxmint/test...

Re: How Is The Mint ISO Created?

The "Art of ISO Spinning" is the chef's secret. Note that Ubuntu features daily ISO builds during almost the entire development cycle. For example, for 18.10: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ It would be nice to have those for Mint as well.... But perhaps that would add too mu...

It looks like the microcode packages are installed by default, in Mint 19. Check it with Synaptic.

Nasty experience.... Are you quite sure that it wasn't simply technical failure at the hardware level? Meaning: DVD rot or mechanical drive failure?

Looks like microcode (both for Intel and AMD) is part of the default installation now? When I check with Synaptic, I have both microcode packages.

Re: Security Breach!!

Solve it with this terminal command: chmod -v 700 $HOME Repeat this in each user account that needs the same protection. Interesting. What exactly is it that this command does? It changes the permissions for your /home folder. 700 protects against any access from other users, while the issuing user...

Re: upgrade and dist-upgrade caused terminal to stop working and Wifi to drop

1. Never update like that. You bypass the protective level system of Update Manager. 2. The inxi output is weird: you should have gotten a far newer kernel because of dist-upgrade. Something is very wrong with your system. Consider a clean re-installation or even a clean installation of the bèta of ...
