Re: Monthly News – August 2024
I appreciate nothing is perfect and there will always be some bugs when "upgrading" from one LM version to another. I also appreciate LM 22 itself and its previous versions is very, very good. But to try and pretend the upgrade is high quality is a nonsense IMHO. I said nothing about the ...

Re: Kernel Drama Around Rust Devs
Can we please keep all gibberish about gender, age, race, sexual preferences and all such modern hysterical bollocks out of this forum? Good God.
If Torvalds says Rust is inferior bad technology, I believe him.

Re: Geen wifi meer na update
Nee.

Re: LM22 - Which Java to download for use with JDownloader
If I was to install the "default-jre" in LM22, would that be the equivalent risk to the default installed version on LM21.3, or would it better because it's a newer version? Same risk, because the openJDK in Mint 21.x should also get security updates, just like the openJDK in Mint 22. Abo...

Re: Need help getting wifi drivers working
If need be, establish temporary internet connection by means of the tethering feature of your cell phone . Please generate an overview of your system like this: - Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window) ; - Make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines; - Co...

Download the Xfce edition of Mint 22, create a bootable USB stick with it and use it to boot into the live session. Do you experience the same behaviour?

Re: Kernel above 6.8 available?
There are always the mainline kernels, but those come with their own disadvantages: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/fatal-mistakes.html#ID6.3.2 (item 6.3.2) The risk is considerably lower with a newer 6.8.x kernel from the Canonical Kernel Team PPA, namely the 6.8.0- 44 instead of your c...

Re: Security concers about Wine come from apps or Wine itself?
@MiZoG: The risk that Wine poses, lies not in malicious Windows programs compromising the system (for which root permissions are needed). The risk lies in contamination/corruption of user files in ~/home . The Wine devs themselves state quite clearly that Wine is malware compatible: https://gitlab.w...

Re: Security concers about Wine come from apps or Wine itself?
So I'd like to ask the experienced Linux users, am I safe with Wine when using only with trusted programs? No. A malicious Windows program might utilize Wine behind your back. Wine creates a massive black security hole in your system. Don't jeopardize your shiny clean Linux like that. You might fin...
