Re: Laggy system that freezes with frequent audio pops
Why did you choose zfs as filesystem, instead of the default stable and reliable ext4? On Mint and the Ubuntu that it's built on, zfs can be considered as experimental and even more or less abandoned: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2023/01/ubuntu-zfs-support-status This complication is also making it m...

What's the upgrade path you wish? In other words: which Mint version do you have now, and which Mint version do you wish to get?

Re: How to hide files in the trash ?
Every drive that you connect has its own trash can. Even things like SD cards and USB thumb drives each have one. This should get rid of the trash can in your home directory , including potentially root-owned stuff in it: sudo rm -v -r ~/.local/share/Trash For recreating it, you need to log out, log...

Re: How to hide files in the trash ?
I understand that I need to do a fresh install of the new mint version but the thing is that I´ve already did a fresh install of 21.2 right after replacing the new hard drive and that´s the thing I just don´t understand. My computer has a new hard drive now, I didn ´t copy the old hard drive to the...

Re: How to hide files in the trash ?
A reliable way of getting rid of these phantom files, is of course the nuclear option: a fresh clean installation of Mint 21.3. But as we're only months away from Mint 22, I recommend to hold out until July or thereabouts (many new Mints were released shortly before Quatorze Juillet), and do the fre...

Re: Selecting which updates to install, metered connection
I think that if your connection is metered, you're probably better off just ditching Flatpak entirely. Exactly. Procedure for that: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/clean-mint.html#ID6 (item 6) Furthermore, you can set Update Manager to only show notifications for security updates. And y...

Re: Two Update Managers in Mint 21.3?
Having two update managers doesn't hurt; it doesn't break anything. But it's confusing. I remember from when I struggled with the dependencies of ttf-mscorefonts-installer, that there were some annoying loops that I had to break loose from. Unfortunately it's rather long ago, so I don't clearly reme...

Re: suggestions for increasing readability?
Hi Teach them to use: Ctrl + Mouse Scroll Wheel to zoom in/out Works in web browser and file managers. Yes, and simply Ctrl + and Ctrl - works as well. Do remember to exclude images from the resizing (because of distortion): First make the Firefox menu bar visible: Firefox panel - right-click on th...

Re: suggestions for increasing readability?
Xfce is a bit more limited than Cinnamon, in this respect. But the increase of font size is the best option, which means that you do have to experiment a bit to find the "right" size.
Cinnamon offers these options:

Re: Cannot get the grub menu
Much easier to edit /etc/default/grub to show grub menu at every boot for just 2 seconds. Surely you can waste 2 seconds at boot to save a lot of palaver. Good point. Personally, I always set it at 5 seconds. However, it's good to know that there is a way of reliably getting the Grub menu to show j...

They're working on it (Mint gets its kernels straight from Ubuntu): https://ubuntu.com/security/CVE-2024-2201 Keep calm and carry on.... Security flaws are discovered (and fixed) on a daily basis. There's always a time gap between discovery and fix. Absolute security does not exist on this earth. Ev...

Re: Cannot get the grub menu
Look, this is getting a bit silly.... The only way to reliably get the Grub menu to show just once , is what I've described. Your method decidedly does not (and was defined wrongly in the first place). Finally: I'm not going to debate this any further, because I've more productive things to do with ...

Re: Cannot get the grub menu
Repeatedly tap the escape key during boot to bring up the grub menu for an UEFI boot computer. That won't give you the Grub menu, but a Grub command prompt. It depends on the timing of when you do it whether or not you get the grub menu or the grub prompt. If you do it too late, you will get the gr...
