Or just run this for automatic cleanup of duplicates:

Code: Select all

F=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list;cat <(sort $F)|uniq|sudo tee $F
Maybe I should submit this as a patch to mintsources > Maintenance, seems to be happening so often...
Cool! Please do that.

Re: Can I still use kernel 3.19.8?

Your system is perfectly fit for Mint 19. I recommend the lightweight Xfce edition, 64-bit:

I did try that command on my laptop which did nothing.
What do you mean it did nothing?
In order to avoid such misunderstandings when dealing with (relative) beginners, I usually advise to use the -v handle in such commands.... :lol:

Re: free online password generators: yay or nay

automated password crackers don't just try single words from whatever list they consult, they try combinations as well, with or without dashes or spaces to combine them. Thanks for your well-argumented response. It's always good to be critical concerning vital affairs like this, and I quite appreci...

Re: free online password generators: yay or nay

I prefer the method Pjotr recommends: I wouldn't. In the words of Bruce Schneier, https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2014/03/choosing_secure_1.html , This is why the oft-cited XKCD scheme for generating passwords -- string together individual words like "correcthorsebatterystaple" -- is no long...

Re: Can I still use kernel 3.19.8?

So if i want to be 'protected' against those threats I have to be using a newer version of mint? Or a newer kernel? Yes. I skipped mint 18.1 and above because I realized the system requirements went up, I and want to keep the system resources as low as possible because I have a low spec PC. Is it a...

Re: Can I still use kernel 3.19.8?

Normally, it's not so bad to continue running a non-updated kernel. The high-risk security fixes are usually for other parts of your system, like your web browser. But in this case you're missing out on kernel fixes/mitigations for Spectre and Meltdown. That's not so good. You might want to consider...

Re: Calc has stopped me migrating from Windows to Linux Mint

Have you considered using Excel in a Windows Virtual Machine, within Linux? That should give you the functionality that you need, while still giving you almost all the advantages of running Linux. :) Personally, I still maintain such a Windows VM (Windows 7) for the sole purpose of being able to upd...
