Please generate an overview of your system like this: - Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window) ; - Make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines; - Copy/paste this command into the terminal: inxi -Fxxxpmrz (if you type: the letter F is a capital letter, and...

Re: Software Manger "updates"

WHVW wrote: Wed Sep 18, 2024 9:47 am Is that really the way it works?
Yes. But especially the stuff in the Universe repo (maintained by the Ubuntu community, not by Canonical or Mint) is not always properly maintained. So it often contains packages with unfixed known vulnerabilities.

Re: Help! I am considering switching from Windows 10 to Linux Mint

Windows games run best (sometimes even only ) on Windows. PC hardware and peripherals usually pose no problems. Test before you install, in the live session of the Mint USB stick. But before you actually install, unplug as many peripherals as you can and only reconnect them after installation (make ...

Re: Kernel Drama Around Rust Devs

And can you tell us, you the last surviving Torvalds true believers, what Torvalds actually says about Rust? He gave the green light for allowing Rust into kernel, no? Ever since he did that every time I hear him talking about Rust he sounds increasingly positive. See here , read here , his latest ...

Translators: check both captain and aptkit

There are two new translatable Mint packages: Captain and aptkit. The translation work needed for Captain is clear: untranslated strings are immediately apparent. Not so for aptkit: even if it shows no untranslated strings on Launchpad, the existing imported(?) translations definitely need attention...

Re: Any way to not have a password?

The root password is essential for root permissions. But it doesn't need to be as secure (long) as your average website password, as it stays local. It's therefore "only" vulnerable for local attacks. Furthermore, after the first spell of tweaking and customizing, you typically only need t...

Re: Monthly News – August 2024

I appreciate nothing is perfect and there will always be some bugs when "upgrading" from one LM version to another. I also appreciate LM 22 itself and its previous versions is very, very good. But to try and pretend the upgrade is high quality is a nonsense IMHO. I said nothing about the ...

Can we please keep all gibberish about gender, age, race, sexual preferences and all such modern hysterical bollocks out of this forum? Good God.

If Torvalds says Rust is inferior bad technology, I believe him.

Sure. But if you want to radically destroy the entire security system of your Linux like that: why did you switch to Linux in the first place?
